It's July 1, officially a holiday here, so I'll keep it brief.

In a wild year that defied all logic, we stand strong and free, proud of who we are, taking pride in what makes us tick and resolute in defense of the human decency that defines us. We're not perfect, but hey, we're not sorry for that. We've got a few folks who whine and grumble about our state in the world, but most of us know that we can accomplish the things we need to solve most of that. Overall, we are a pretty happy bunch.

Looking around, we know that we are the envy of many in the world. It's kind of funny that most rational people who are impacted by the insanity of the moment would move here in a heartbeat if they could.

I've got a few quibbles with what Gemini came up with. First, most people in the venture capital community would disagree with that aspect of what it suggested, and that much seems true. Second, the PDF suggested that we have an average workweek of 32 hours, and that is just plain wrong. Other than that, much of it seems fairly correct.

So overall, we're pretty proud of who we are, where we stand, and the fact that we are, and will always be, the True North Strong and Free.

A remarkable moment in 2001 when I gave a keynote on the floor of the Canadian Senate.

The massive shift from carbon combustion to electric power is transforming transportation, infrastructure, and energy supply chains. This is not a gradual transition but rather a fundamental rewiring of how power flows through our economy. Some folks have made it a culture war but that will have little impact in the long run - or will cost certain regions dearly as the future marches on.
For quite some time, I've bemoaned the fact that for a while now, obvious issues of future progress are being set back at various places in the world as they become a part of the culture wars - such as here.

But, here we are.

And the funny thing is, despite that, the rest of the world marches on.
The global shift to an electrified energy system is no longer a question of if but how fast - the transition has surpassed a critical tipping point. It's being driven by three powerful, self-reinforcing forces: superior economics, accelerating technological innovation, and entrenched market momentum. No doubt there are some hurdles - much of it having to do with politics, not science - those are transitory, and will be limited to nations that choose to try to go back to the way it was, not to where the rest of the world is going.

Why? At its core, the shift to electrification is fueled by powerful economic advantages.

Cost Competitiveness: Renewables are now the cheapest source for new power generation in most markets across the globe. 81% of all new renewable capacity added worldwide in 2023 generated electricity more cheaply than the most economical fossil fuel options.

Price Stability: With zero fuel costs, renewables offer predictable electricity prices for the long term, protecting economies from volatile fossil fuel markets. This volatility acts as a hidden tax; at its peak in 2022, rising energy prices were responsible for one-third of the 40-year high inflation in the United States.

Externalities: The world is increasingly recognizing the hidden costs of fossil fuels, from climate damage to severe health impacts. Fossil fuel air pollution is linked to 4.5 million premature deaths annually, carrying a global economic cost of $2.9 trillion each year.

At the heart of this is a continuous cycle of innovation that accelerates the transition.

For decades, our model has been simple: massive, centralized power stations push electricity in one direction to passive consumers. That era is decisively ending. We are witnessing a fundamental shift from a one-way delivery monologue to a multi-directional energy grid. I must admit, it's kind of bizarre writing about this right now because the trend is real, and yet one nation is busy turning its back on the reality of the trend (and many other things.)

This evolution toward intelligent, multi-directional networks represents a critical inflection point over the next five years. Essentially, it's being a centralized grid, to a decentralized, distributed grid, with millions of energy inputs.

So what's it all about? Continuing on the energy theme from yesterday, this transformation isn't happening by accident. It's being propelled by three powerful, interconnected forces I call the "Three Ds":

Decarbonization: Despite some areas with political pushback, the world is aggressively shifting from fossil fuels to renewables.

Decentralization: Energy is now being generated, stored, and managed closer to where it's consumed. This gives rise to the "prosumer"—an active participant who both produces and consumes energy.

Digitalization: We're embedding intelligence into the network. Smart meters, IoT sensors, and advanced software are creating a responsive, "aware" grid where electricity and data flow in both directions.

The shift is pretty profound. In the old paradigm, you were a passive consumer with little control. Energy got sent to you. The new reality empowers you as a "prosumer." in which you contribute your energy when available.

Think of it this way - various groups right now are building smart home thermostats that manage your batteries and power generation - and become the next billion-dollar industry by doing so.

It's July 4, and so I am pausing my Megatrends series for the day to give a shoutout to all my American friends..

In that context, it's an 'interesting' time to be a futurist. I find myself, as do many others, in the odd situation of outlining the massive opportunities of tomorrow to a nation and people who seem all too eager to dismiss those opportunities. It's not just 'interesting' - it's just downright weird at times.

As a Canadian, the vast majority of my work over the last 20 years has been throughout the US. I thought I would just spend a moment to catch the idea in today's quote by looking back at some of my keynotes through the years. I truly wonder, at times, what has happened. My thinking is that the result of much of this is that many of the organizations I found myself spending time with now find themselves sliding back instead of moving forward. The more that happens, the tougher it becomes to reverse the direction.

The United Soybean Board had me in to talk to the top 500 soybean farmers in the US in 2015. They wanted me to focus on what they knew to be the massive market opportunity continuing to emerge in China. Oops.

The National Rural Electrical Cooperative booked me multiple times to focus on the dramatic changes occurring with solar, wind, batteries, and microgrid technologies. They're now amid massive funding cutbacks, deployment cancellations, and investment decline

The National Association of Landscape Professionals had me in for a talk on the future trends impacting their industry. They didn't want too much of a focus on workforce issues. They've recently put out a memo about what to do when immigration officials show up on a job or worksite

The Western Growers Association represents most of the western agricultural community in California, Nevada, and Arizona, and had me in for a talk on the future of farming. They too didn't want to mention the workforce issue. Some of their migrant labor is now being chased through the fields.

These are only a few of the specific clients who now find themselves deep in some weird future.

Sustainability is moving from corporate responsibility to core business strategy, despite political pushback. The circular economy, which involves turning waste streams into value, represents one of the greatest untapped opportunities of our time - a multi-trillion dollar opportunity!

What's it all about? Perhaps the best example of what it is all about? Apple, at this point, essentially designs the iPhone and other products not only for sale to the consumer, but for eventual disposal, with deconstruction of returned devices for parts, materials, and more. That's called 'design for deconstruction,' and it not only makes sense from an environmental perspective, but from an economic perspective.

With that example in mind, the interesting thing is that, unlike many sustainability or other corporate responsibility initiatives, which seem to be thrown away as political sands shift, this one isn't going away. It isn't just a buzzword or a niche aspect of corporate social responsibility. It's evolving into a core business strategy.

How big an opportunity is it? Pretty big - estimates going from $339 billion in 2022 to $8 to 10 trillion by 2035!

There are a few ideas with the trend: one is designing products to last longer.

Another is to design them for deconstruction, as previously mentioned.

And a third is the integration of advanced recycling technologies into every aspect of the supply chain - so that supply chains don't just get the product to the consumer, they also take over when the consumer sends it back!

With all this in mind, there are many sector-specific opportunities.

There's a lot of detail that follows, but it's worthwhile to dig into this in the context of megatrend thinking. Coming together all at once is a lot of science, technology (AI), venture capital money, big, bold thinking, and creative R&D passion. In that context, the focus of this science has fundamentally shifted from merely extending lifespan to enhancing **healthspan** — the period of life spent in good health, free from chronic disease and disability.

This paradigm shift recognizes that adding years to life has little value without maintaining quality of life and functional independence.

Of course, with all this science and technology comes an age-old debate. (Pardon the pun again.) The fixed ceiling perspective argues that human biology has a programmed limit, with data suggesting a plateau around 115-125 years - i.e. we will never get older than that. In contrast, the negligible senescence theory points to species like the Greenland shark or the immortal jellyfish, which show no age-related decline. This suggests that aging is a technical problem that can ultimately be solved.

Overall, this is a very significant megatrend to watch, given how quickly it is moving but also given how our fascination with it will never age. (Sorry)

The one-size-fits-all era in medicine is ending. Treatments, nutrition, and wellness approaches tailored to individual genetic profiles are becoming the standard, not the exception. As with every post in this series, there's a PDF here that goes into more depth on this trend.

What's it all about? We are combining what we might call 'next-generation genomic sequencing', AI, and CRISPR gene editing, to come up with a new health paradigm that involves 'fixing people before they are sick rather than after.' Why these 3 trends? The cost for genomic sequencing is collapsing, AI is accelerating the ability to do so, and gene editing allows us to correct the genetic causes of disease at the source.

Before going further, it's important to define the revolution by understanding two key terms.

The first is Personalized Medicine, which uses an individual's unique genomic, environmental, and lifestyle information to guide decisions for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. It's based on the idea that because no two individuals are the same, they should not receive the same healthcare.

Brain health and performance optimization are emerging as the next frontier, similar to how cardiac care transformed in the previous century. Let us call it the ‘cognitive economy,’ one that involves tools, treatments, and technologies for brain enhancement. It is just beginning.

This revolution is giving rise to a new, multi-trillion-dollar "cognitive economy"—an ecosystem of science, technology, and services dedicated to understanding, preserving, and enhancing the human brain.

First up is 'mass customization.' What's that? The proliferation of specialized tiny robots and drones for specific functions is creating swarm-based solutions to complex problems across industries, from agriculture to infrastructure maintenance to healthcare. Imagine a series of automated drones checking utility infrastructure for faults—that is the new world we are building right now.

Let's call it "The Dawn of the Swarm". I could see some dramatic Star Wars-style theme music going with it!

I spent way too much time trying to get an old Adafruit 2.8" touchscreen working on a Raspberry PI 3.

Reminds me of what it was like trying to configure X11 back in 1997 on FreeBSD where you had to fuck around with specific screen geometry.

Fun times.

The main issue was that `image.tobytes()` outputs 24-bit RGB data, but your display expects 16-bit RGB565 data packed as little-endian 16-bit integers.

Product lifecycles have collapsed as things become 'things from the olden days' faster. It is not just that business models that once lasted decades now face obsolescence in years or even months. The ability to continuously reinvent your value proposition is no longer optional; it is survival.

Let's call it "The End of Enduring Advantage." In the future, pretty much every organization is going to have to navigate the era of compressed innovation, mimicking what leading-edge organizations are already doing today.

Retail and commercial spaces are being fundamentally reimagined, not eliminated. They are being transformed into experience centres rather than transactional environments. The role of physical space in customer journeys is being completely redefined.

It's called The Experience Economy, and involves the introduction to your vocabulary of an entirely new word: phygital. Here's the full PDF report.

What's it all about? Think about how much retail has changed in the last few years with e-commerce and online shopping. Mix in the accelerator that was the pandemic. Add to it faster-moving technology. Bring in the fact that many retail stores are in decline in terms of traffic, design, and layout as people shop in person less. The idea? We all know that jobs and careers are changing, but do we know how much? And how fast?

Hint: It's bigger than you think, and will happen faster than you are prepared for.

We've all become familiar with this trend, but suddenly, with the arrival and acceleration of AI, the speed of the change is now picking up the pace. What we thought might have been decades away - the disappearance of many careers and the rapid emergence of new careers - will now take years rather than decades. What's happening is this: there are now several simultaneous, accelerating trends at work involving demographics and technology:

- a demographic crisis in developed nations (a shrinking workforce)
- this creates a powerful incentive for technological adoption
- labor shortages are counteracted by AI productivity gains
- resulting in a desire or need to accelerate AI adoption to maintain economic viability
- which fundamentally challenges society to reskill the human workforce to effectively collaborate with machines!

Scope creep!!!!

So I decided I wanted to have a little Raspberry PI 5 with screen display what flights I can see from my chair on the deck, so I worked with Gemini and Claude to build a little system that grabs the JSON feed from my Piaware already running, filter it, do some online queries for flight details, and build a set of screens so I know what's going on.

Still some font cleanup and now doing a big structural change....

This creates unprecedented challenges and opportunities for wealth transfer, housing, care systems, and intergenerational business models. It's a pretty significant trend, and one often not covered. Cities are not just growing, they are evolving into integrated systems for food, energy, transportation, and living that function very differently from urban environments. This represents a massive infrastructure opportunity, particularly as 67 megacities (cities with over 10 million inhabitants) will exist, with a combined population of approximately 670 million. It's called the "integrated city", and it's a pretty significant transformation of what we think of as urban areas.

What's it all about?

Cities worldwide are undergoing their most profound transformation since the Industrial Revolution. This is not merely about making cities “smarter” with technology, but about a fundamental rethinking of the entire concept and layout of a city.

And it's a HUGE megatrend infrastructure opportunity, creating a market projected to reach $3.76 trillion by 2030.

Part of the reason for the trend is that simply, we simply need to rethink how cities function in light of scarce resources. Cities consume 75% of extracted natural resources and generate up to 80% of greenhouse gas emissions, making a transition from linear ‘take-make-waste’ models to circular resource flows an imperative for survival.

It's not just that - it's the rise of the megacities that is driving this trend. The global urban population is projected to grow from 4.8 billion today to 5.6 billion by 2035.

Overall, the fact is this: the $3.76 trillion opportunity represents not just economic value, but the chance to create more livable, equitable, and sustainable urban environments.

What's up?

I've been busy writing my series about 30 megatrends, and made it to #25 yesterday.

However, there's a brief pause before I set off to finish it with the final 5 items next week, sometime. We are off to a wedding for some wonderful friends of ours, and also have some wonderfully personal events unfolding in our lives. I want to make sure I'm giving full attention to these things that matter, while also being respectful to the depth of trends I'm covering in my Megatrends series. I plan on getting back to it next Tuesday.

That said, I'll be writing some 'shorter' posts tomorrow and Monday.
Today's post? Does everybody have the capacity for anything? That phrase came from my folder of inspirational thoughts - I've got a few thousand of them in my email account. I'm constantly watching and learning from the world around me, and as soon as I see something that inspires me, wham! It goes into the folder.

I was thinking about this phrase in the context of what is happening with AI in many workplaces today - the trend seems to be clear. Countless organizations are making the decision-or perhaps the word is mandate-that AI should be used by everyone in everything they do. It was notably initiated by Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke back in March. In a memo that was first leaked and later shared publicly. Lütke's memo established a clear "AI-first" ethos at the e-commerce giant, with the thinking being that "using AI effectively is now a fundamental expectation of everyone at Shopify."

Many other companies have also been jumping on board. While we can endlessly debate the pros and cons of such a move, I won't do that here. I will note that as part of my journey of learning, research, and trends observation, I've been busy trying to assess the trend by integrating AI into almost everything I do. Including today, this particular post.

I fed the original idea - 'everybody has the capacity for anything' into Google Gemini, along with every single blog post I've written since 2002. I asked it to come up with an overview of many of the inspirational ideas I've shared over the last 23 years.  I then took the results and fed them into Gamma - my current AI slide generation tool of choice.

The result was kind of magical.
