โ€œEmbrace the chaos" - Futurist Jim Carroll

Constant chaos is now a feature, not a bug.

Get used to it. It might be your new normal.

That's one reason why I've writtenย my book Dancing in the Rain (currently being edited and, if I am lucky, expected out this month!) I knew it was necessary to explore how leaders can thrive when chaos and uncertainty collide. While some people freeze in panic, true uncertainty warriors accelerate into the storm by embracing the chaos.

Why? Because chaos reveals opportunities that rigid thinking can't see. When everything feels unpredictable, most companies retreat into survival mode. They fine-tune when they should be reinventing. They become chaos warriors! They understand something fundamentally different: You can't shrink your way to the future. You've got to create momentum when everyone else is standing still.

This brings me to Chaos Theory, a state that scientists have studied for years. It tells us that even in seemingly random systems, patterns exist. In business, those patterns are opportunities among the madness.

Small interventions can create massive impacts. The butterfly effect isn't just physicsโ€”it's business strategy.ย Smart leaders look for these patterns in the noise. They spot the weak signals while competitors chase yesterday's data.

The key thing is that they make bold moves based on emerging trends, not fading forecasts. Need those trends? I just put together a site for a client of 101 trends you should be thinking about. It's at 101trends.jimcarroll.com .

Dancing in the rain? Think about Zoom during the pandemic. Netflix's streaming pivot during economic turbulence. The companies that didn't just survive uncertainty. they reshaped entire industries because of it.

They weren't reckless. They were strategically chaotic! They were chaos warriors!

Chaos isn't comfortable.

But comfort isn't where the future lives.

So when the next wave of constant chaos hits (and it will), ask yourself:

Will you run for shelter with everyone else? Or will you step into the storm with arms wide open?

Because while others are waiting for the chaos to pass, you could be using it to build something extraordinary.

The future doesn't belong to the prepared. It belongs to the bold.

And the boldest act of all?

Learning to dance in the rain.

"๐‘บ๐’•๐’๐’‘ ๐’”๐’‚๐’š๐’Š๐’๐’ˆ ๐’Ž๐’‚๐’š๐’ƒ๐’†!" - Futurist Jim Carroll

You need to commit.

To do that, you need to banish the 'maybe's.

You know:

"Maybe next quarter"
"Maybe when we have clarity"
"Maybe when I'm more comfortable"
"Maybe when the market settles"
"Maybe after we see what competitors do"
"Maybe when we have more money"
"Maybe when the timing is better"
"Maybe when we understand the risks better"
"Maybe when customers start asking for it"
"Maybe when we have the right team"
"Maybe when the technology is more mature"
"Maybe when we get approval from leadership"
"Maybe when we have more data"
"Maybe when things aren't so uncertain"
"Maybe when we finish our current projects"
"Maybe when the economy improves"
"Maybe when we have a guarantee it'll work"
"Maybe when someone else proves it first"
"Maybe when we can afford to fail"
"Maybe when we know exactly what we're doing"
"Maybe when the stars align"
"Maybe when we have time to do it right"
"Maybe when we understand all the implications"
"Maybe when we can measure the ROI"
"Maybe when it becomes urgent"
The "maybe's" are a silent killer of much innovation.

Stop saying maybe.

Start saying when.

Better yet, start saying now.

And here's what I know.

Most organizations fail. Not because they want to, but because they continue to let mediocre behaviors rule their culture.
That's the insight that inspired my two latest books, each tackling innovation and growth from a unique angle.

The first book, "๐—˜๐—บ๐—ฏ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐— ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ฐ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐˜๐˜†: ๐—›๐—ผ๐˜„ ๐˜๐—ผ ๐——๐—ผ ๐—ก๐—ผ๐˜๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ก๐—ผ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—น๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—”๐—ฐ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ต ๐—ฎ๐˜€ ๐—Ÿ๐—ถ๐˜๐˜๐—น๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ๐˜€ ๐—ฃ๐—ผ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ฏ๐—น๐—ฒ," is not your typical leadership manual. Instead, I wrote it as a playful, satirical mirror held up to reveal the subtle yet pervasive ways teams unknowingly settle for less. Over the years, I've noticed how easy it is for organizations to drift into habits that quietly sabotage their potential, keeping them comfortably but frustratingly average. This book vividly highlights these self-defeating behaviors, enabling you to recognize and steer clear of them.

I dare you to share it with your team, and ask them to identify the behaviors they admit to being guilty of.

Then comes its companion, "๐˜Œ๐˜ด๐˜ค๐˜ข๐˜ฑ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜”๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ค๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜บ: ๐˜๐˜ฐ๐˜ธ ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ ๐˜ˆ๐˜ค๐˜ค๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ฆ ๐˜ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ณ ๐˜๐˜ถ๐˜ต๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ˆ๐˜ค๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ฆ๐˜ท๐˜ฆ ๐˜‰๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ฌ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜จ๐˜ฉ ๐˜™๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ถ๐˜ญ๐˜ต๐˜ด!" It directly addresses the mindset shifts and practical actions required to break free from those ingrained patterns. It urges you to push beyond your comfort zones, chase bold thinking, embrace calculated risks, and pursue genuine excellence.

Together, these books offer a powerful combination. "๐™€๐™ข๐™—๐™ง๐™–๐™˜๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™ˆ๐™š๐™™๐™ž๐™ค๐™˜๐™ง๐™ž๐™ฉ๐™ฎ" helps pinpoint and understand the hidden reasons teams stall, while "๐™€๐™จ๐™˜๐™–๐™ฅ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™ˆ๐™š๐™™๐™ž๐™ค๐™˜๐™ง๐™ž๐™ฉ๐™ฎ" equips you with strategies and inspiration to overcome these barriers and thrive. I've consistently witnessed that the path to excellence, though challenging, is infinitely more rewarding than settling for less.

"Don't try to get back to normal. Get better at what's next!" - Futurist Jim Carroll

One thing that strikes me about these times is that I see a lot of people saying that they can't wait for things to get back to normal.

Me too.

But there is a trap in this thinking: the new normal won't be the same as the old normal. While you are busy waiting to get back to it, 'it' will have changed.

This means we need to confront a fundamental truth about how we navigate disruption, uncertainty, and the accelerating pace of change that defines our era. That's the key theme I've been capturing in my new book I just read the latest version of the manuscript yesterday after the edit by my wife and business partner, and I must say it's pretty good!ย

What became apparent is that this concept of 'getting better at what's next' has emerged as one of the central themes found within its pages. Here are some foundational ideas from the book that illuminate why this mindset is so critical:

Nostalgia is a sedative, not a strategy: I point this out: "Nostalgia is a powerful drug. But nostalgia is not a strategy. It's a sedative." Clinging to what once was prevents you from moving forward.

The familiar is actively failing all around us: Old industries are dying, old skills are becoming irrelevant, old knowledge is going out of date, and old jobs are disappearing. This means returning to old ways is not a viable option.

The future arrives regardless of our readiness for it." It "does not wait for comfort" and "does not slow down in a recession - it speeds up." Tomorrow is going to happen - will you be part of it?

Crises reshape the ambitions of winners: Recessions and disruptions are not the time to shrink your ambition. They are a time to reshape it. They force a focus on "what could be."

Growth stems from disruption, not past optimization: Growth does not come from optimizing what used to work, it comes from disrupting it! Organizations must "redesign, not refine" and "reinvent, not recover."

Right now, this philosophy matters more than ever. Accepting that change is constant and focusing on future improvement, helps you to build resilience.

"Getting better at what's next" inherently demands innovation.

"The gap between your ambition and your capabilities isn't a limitationโ€”it's an invitation!" - Futurist Jim Carroll

Lots of people don't believe they have what it takes.

They get down about it. They get down on themselves. They go into a funk.

And they're going about it all wrong.

Don't think about it as a failure - think about it as an initiative to grow. Don't view your lack of skills as a barrier - view it as a wall to smash through. Don't think about your lack of knowledge on any one particular topic as a weakness - view it as an opportunity to learn!
If you don't have what it takes, do what it takes to get to what it takes!

Think about the mismatch this way - it's an invitation to do better! To learn more. To work harder. To revisit your efforts. To challenge yourself more!

And that's precisely why I've released Embracing Mediocrity and Escaping Mediocrity. They're designed to be read together as your personal invitation to bridge any gap that might exist in the way of your future.

They will give you a powerful, way to close the gap between your skills and your goals; your ambition and your capabilities; your ideas and initiative.

So, if you feel that gap between what you want to achieve and where you are, consider it an invitation. An invitation to pick up both Embracing Mediocrity and Escaping Mediocrity. Consume their wisdom together, and you might truly find something that will help you to identify what is holding you back โ€“ and what you can do to keep moving forward!

Remember -> they're at mediocrity.jimcarroll.comย

Bridge the gap!

Anyways, we're in a recession.

One of the interesting things about being someone who spends a lot of time speaking to leadership teams at corporate events is you get a lot of early-warning signs as to the corporate cutbacks that are underway. And I can tell you this - companies are cutting back, deferring meetings, pulling travel budgets, eliminating marketing dollars, and refusing to approve sending their people to conferences and events. Not only that, but the research I am always doing for various inquiries and opportunities also shows, and the discussions I have with people, show all the other warning signs - projects being postponed, capital budgets being curtailed, strategic planning sessions being canceled.

And everyone has gone into a 'wait-and-see' mode.

It's pretty clear that globally the economy is in a bit of a mess.

That's a lot of bad stuff going on.

This is why right now is the perfect time to ignore it all and move to the next phase.

Which brings me to The interesting thing about getting the book ready for print leads me to read it again (and again) as a part of the editing part.

And I can't help but take some personal inspiration from what I wrote in Chapter 1, to open the book.

I'm inspired by my inspiration, and I'm already moving on!

Read it, and move on with me.

Dancing in the Rain: How Bold Leaders Grow Stronger in Stormy Times
Chapter 1. Release Date July 2025

โ€œThe smartest strategy in a downturn? Say no to the narrative!โ€

Your growth story begins the moment you decide not to take part in someone elseโ€™s pessimism.

An economic downturn? Massive economic volatility? A lack of clarity in economic signals that might suggest a recession? Significant industry disruption which is causing havoc?

Is everyone hunkering down, letting negative sentiment drive their decisions?
Just refuse to participate!

In an era of panic, the boldest act is to opt out of the fear. The future does not belong to the cautious โ€” it belongs to the courageous.

Offense Wins When Everyone Plays Defence

Winners do not wait. They create.

Recessions do not kill opportunity. Mindsets do.

Volatility does not hold back the future. A chase for clarity does.

Thatโ€™s why the smartest strategy is to โ€˜just say noโ€™ to the narrative. If everyoneโ€™s playing defense, the game is yours to win on offense.

The path to growth starts with rejecting the crowdโ€™s caution.

"Experiment learn repeat. The only formula you need!" - Futurist Jim Carroll

Wrap your head around the growth of knowledge - and what you need to enhance your knowledge to deal with its reality.

You should know that you don't know what you need to know.

You should know that you need to know it.

And then, set out to know it.

When you do so, know that you can only know if you get involved with it.

Get involved with it.

You'll probahttps://elk.zone/composebly fail.

But that's ok because you've learned about it,

So do it again.

Put this on repeat.

Compound what you know.

That's what you need to know.ย Warren Buffet said it best:

โ€œRead 500 pages every day. Thatโ€™s how knowledge works. It builds up, like compound interest. All of you can do it, but I guarantee not many of you will do it.โ€

Call it just-in-time knowledge on steroids.

"Most people don't recognize the depths of their failure until long after they've been in there." - Futurist Jim Carroll"

So the question on most people's minds is - when will all of this end?

Go on, admit it. If you are like most people who follow me and read these daily posts, you get up every morning and check the news to see if a certain event has transpired.

So far, no.

And you check again the next day.

And the next.

So where are we now?

What's the path out?

No one knows. But I do know it will take quite some time.ย I've long learned through observation that most people don't understand they're on the wrong path until it's far too late. CEOs always believe they are invincible until the wreckage of their company surrounds them - Jim Balsillie of Blackberry fame comes to mind, and as of late, Elon Musk. Star athletes keep on trying and trying, failing ever more frequently as their body begins to fail them, never quite accepting the reality of their condition. Alcoholics and addicts always face a tortuous path to acceptance of their condition. Entireย nations become convinced they can follow a path of destroying their economy to "improve" it.

Anyways, here we are. What's interesting to think about is how this unfolds from here.

What we are dealing with is what we might call "delayed failure recognition." What's that? It's a cold, hard truth that there is often some seriously twisted wiring in the human brains of folks around us, with the impact that they are often blind to their demise. Simply put, the typical logic of failure acceptance is non-existent.

Let's break down the psychological landmines that is "delayed failure recognition.....

"Slow innovation, timid ideas, process over imagination, small-minded thinking, diminished ambition: these are the signs of an abandoned future."- Futurist Jim Carroll

So Apple had their big developer conference the other day. This is the event where they lay out their plans for the coming year and the future about software, hardware, and new lines of business.

And it seems it was an entirely ho-hum affair - essentially consisting of a new software design (that many are panning), scaling back their AI efforts, and introducing a few new features here and there, This is from the company that reinvented the phone, music, computer and other industries with bold visions, a fundamentally new technology that reimagined entire industries.

Apple finds itself trapped in what I call the "innovation plateau paradox" โ€“ having achieved such extraordinary success with revolutionary products like the iPhone and iPad that subsequent releases inevitably feel incremental by comparison.

Way back in 2014, I wrote a document - 25 Trends for 2025.

What was trend **#24** for 2025 on the list? I suggested this:

---
Apple is delisted

Once one of the worldโ€™s most innovative, cash-rich, highly valued company, Apple enters a new phase in 2025 when it is delisted from most global stock markets.

Why?

Most industry leaders never survive; there is always someone with a better idea.

Itโ€™s the age-old rule of business: incumbency is not a guarantee!

----

Tongue in cheek, my main point was that eventually, unless they keep relentlessly focused on creative innovation, every company eventually fumbles, makes mistakes, loses its mojo, and starts to fall behind. (Check out trend **#25** on my list from 2014 - it's kind of fun! And I did a full analysis of my prediction from 2014 in a post last December.)

That's where some people are pointing out how Apple seems to be drowning. Sure, it's had stunning innovation in the last few years, particularly with its staggeringly fast and extremely powerful new Mx-computer chips. But the rest? It's stumbled badly on AI, abandoned a long-running effort to get into the car industry, and failed with the mass consumer market launch of its VisionPro headset.

The real challenge isn't just about creating the "next big thing," but about maintaining innovative momentum when you've already transformed entire industries.

When it's one big announcement is something like "liquid glass," you have to wonder.
----
Futurist Jim Carroll is working hard at working to make trend **#25** on his original 25 Trends for 2025 list (that he wrote in 2014) come true.

I'm learning to make little cartoons. Pity my family!

Anyway, with that in mind, I'm thrilled to announce that we got an ISBN for ๐‘ซ๐’‚๐’๐’„๐’Š๐’๐’ˆ ๐’Š๐’ ๐’•๐’‰๐’† ๐‘น๐’‚๐’Š๐’ yesterday, so we are pretty close to being in print! I celebrated by putting together a little cartoon that showed my patience through the process.

I've also been tracking the weather for this weekend for a wedding shower for some good family friends. It's been looking like rain, but the forecast suddenly started to look better. I created a little cartoon to share this good news with my close friends.

All of this has come about as I continue to relentlessly explore the creative opportunities that are AI. (I haven't even touched on the massive explosion of creative innovation occurring with AI video. Suffice it to say, that the Bible, Titanic, and Star Wars will never be the same. If you are on social media, you will know.)

What is the point of all this? I continue to learn new skills, exploring the depths of opportunity and challenge with all the new technologies that surround us. This brings me to the point of today's post - I spent a little bit of time yesterday, pulling together this PDF and website - 101 Learnings for a Better Life. It's a series of lessons that I've worked to summarize over time that tries to summarize my approach to things. It's at betterlife.jimcarroll.com

I would encourage you to read it and share it - you might find some optimism among the gloom that seems to be a big part of our world today. And in fact, that's the origin of today's quote - because our future truly is a canvas of endless opportunity! I asked ChatGPT to summarize my 101 learnings and that is what it came back with!

Oh, and if you would like a personal little 6-frame cartoon with my 'little guy', send me a message with what you are looking for!

Futurist Jim Carrollโ€™s family has not commented so far on the random little cartoons he is sending them throughout the day.

Pre-orders are officially LIVE!

I'm incredibly excited to announce that my new book, "๐ท๐‘Ž๐‘›๐‘๐‘–๐‘›๐‘” ๐‘–๐‘› ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’ ๐‘…๐‘Ž๐‘–๐‘›: ๐ป๐‘œ๐‘ค ๐ต๐‘œ๐‘™๐‘‘ ๐ฟ๐‘’๐‘Ž๐‘‘๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘  ๐บ๐‘Ÿ๐‘œ๐‘ค ๐‘†๐‘ก๐‘Ÿ๐‘œ๐‘›๐‘”๐‘’๐‘Ÿ ๐‘–๐‘› ๐‘†๐‘ก๐‘œ๐‘Ÿ๐‘š๐‘ฆ ๐‘‡๐‘–๐‘š๐‘’๐‘ ," is now available for pre-order, with delivery expected in July 2025!

For over 30 years, I've had the privilege of guiding organizations through disruption and change, witnessing firsthand that "the future does not wait for the cautious. It belongs to the bold". This book distills decades of insight into a practical blueprint for leaders navigating today's complex world.

"Dancing in the Rain" challenges the conventional wisdom that "the best thing to do is to hunker down and wait it out" during uncertainty.ย Instead, it champions the idea that "the smartest strategy is to 'just say no' to the narrative" of pessimism, and that "mindset is the first move" to seizing opportunity.

This book is EXACTLY what you need right now!

You'll learn why "the future accelerates toward those who refuse to stand still", and how to cultivate the resilience to "dance in the rain" by embracing action, driving innovation, and transforming challenges into growth opportunities. This book is your roadmap to not just survive, but to truly thrive, when the skies grow dark.

Pre-order your copy today and get ready to lead stronger in stormy times!

"Every good moment of uncertainty demands the certainty of action!" - Futurist Jim Carroll

You can pre-order Dancing in the Rain effective today!

I've got a final, print-ready manuscript in my hands, which needs a final read-through before we commit to it. I'm waiting for my cover guy to finish off the cover. After that, a few more buttons to hit, and we are good to go. There are a few logistical hurdles to get through, in that the team that works with me (aka family) has a few other commitments (aka day jobs) that take precedence. It will at least be by July - I am hoping for sooner.

What a wild voyage!

The actual date that I started the blog series was April 7, so it will turn out to be just a little more than 2 months from the time I conceived of the idea of the book to its release.

Think about where we were just two months ago. The insanity of the reality of a global trade war was setting in; markets were uncertain; and clarity was lacking. And if it isn't evident to you yet, all the signs are there that we are already in the midst of what will be a rather prolonged and significant economic retraction.

That's why I decided that what I needed to do was begin to summarize everything I had learned, observed, and researched about how companies and executives responded to previous periods of economic decline. In the previous decades, I had developed a LOT of insight into the criticality of innovation through a recession; of staying relentlessly focused on growth; and on finding opportunity while everyone else was retrenching. I had a significant amount of material on the strategies, mindsets, actions, and undertakings of those who were bold enough to not just focus on the challenges of today, but to double down on the opportunities of tomorrow.

So I began writing. And writing. And writing.

Somewhere along the way, I realized I had a book in there. I remember the night I was out for an after-dinner walk with my wife, and I carefully broached the fact that I was 'doing another one.' Keep in mind that she - as my business partner and editor - was still immersed in the process of getting my book Escaping Mediocrity out the door. This came after a fast project to get the other book, Embracing Mediocrity in print. All during this time, she was taking on the role of Treasurer and going back on the Board of a charity for special needs young adults that we are heavily involved with. She was none too thrilled but knows me all too well.

And so here we are. I practice what I preach. The core message of the book is that every crisis demands that we don't freeze but act. That we don't suddenly go into a state of indecision, but move forward decisively. While everyone else is focused on the current moment, we need to prepare for the next one.

That while others are doing what they can to avoid the storm, we need to go out into it with full determination, and dance.

I hope you will do a pre-order. We've worked tremendously hard to get to this point, and I am eager to get what I think is one of my best books (this one being #43 I think) into your hands!

Dance!

In the rain!

"Be the architect of your future, not a prisoner of your past!" - Futurist Jim Carroll

Let's do a test on future readiness!

You should be ready for disruption, change, innovation, creativity!

Answer these questions honestly. This will help you assess if you are ready to do what it takes for tomorrows world, instead of being trapped in todays:

6.ย Do I adapt in line with the speed of changes that surrounds me?
7.ย Do I abandon past thinking and focus enthusiastically on the future?
8.ย Do I take action instead of deferring decisions indefinitely?
9.ย Do I build experiential capital through calculated risks and new experiences?
10. Do I prepare for rapid innovation and quick execution?
11. Do I know the major trends affecting my career path?
12. Do I accept volatility as normal and structure myself accordingly?
13. Do I make things happen, or do I often find myself reacting to events?
14. Do I focus on growth and opportunity over current limitations?
15. Do I regularly re-evaluate my goals given changing circumstances?
16. Do I create excitement and purpose in my daily life?
17. Do I immerse myself in discovering and applying new ideas globally?
18. Do I embrace diverse perspectives to foster my creativity?
19. Do I ask tough questions that challenge my assumptions?
20. Do I consistently innovate and look for new ways to do things in my life?
21. Do I regularly break old habits that hinder progress?
22. Do I focus on transforming my future over regretting the past?
23. Do I plan for future unknowns rather than ignoring them?
24. Do I cultivate imagination and initiative for personal transformation?
25. Do I approach the future with optimism and a belief in my ability to adapt

Giving honest answers to these issues will really help you assess your career path when it comes to some of the most important skills of our time.

Do you have what it takes to be the architect of your own future, knowing what's required as a foundation?

(What a stage! But that's not me - that's something undeniably powerful from Ideogram.AI!)

Lots of folks are struggling. For countless people, 2025 has proven to be a less-than-magical year.

In that context, have you ever thought one of the best ways to give yourself some hope is by giving some back? That you can best move forward by helping others do the same?

Let's think about the power of kindness.

There's something undeniably powerful in hope. You can spend a small moment to spark a belief in someone else that there is a brighter future, and maybe encourage them to take their next step.

There's something undeniably powerful in truth. In an error in which it is becoming in short supply, staking a moral ground truth and encouraging others to do so can, in the long run, help lay the groundwork for real solutions and progress.

There's something undeniably powerful in empathy. When you spend more time understanding another perspective and showing that you care, you will give someone the exact support they need.

There's something undeniably powerful in vulnerability. When you dare to share your own experiences openly, you will encourage others to trust you and seek the help they need.

There's something undeniably powerful in kindness. At this moment in time, extending a helping hand or a thoughtful gesture can directly brighten someone's day.

There's something undeniably powerful in giving. Whether it's your time, resources, or funds, know that you always have the chance to make a tangible difference in someone's life.

There's something undeniably powerful in patience. Knowing that everyone is in a different stage on their journey, and so offering them the support of waiting can encourage them to keep going.

There's something undeniably powerful in trust. If you take a moment to show confidence in the abilities of others, you will be empowered. them to act and succeed on their own.

There's something undeniably powerful in forgiveness. The simple fact is, that we all make mistakes, and the act will allow others to move forward from past hurts and achieve what they need to.

There's something undeniably powerful in listening. In an era in which everyone is shouting, taking the time to truly hear what someone else is saying, shows the respect they might need at this difficult moment.

There's something undeniably powerful in purpose. Because you will find meaning in serving others, turning your good intentions into impactful actions.

There's something undeniably powerful in all of us.

Futurist Jim Carroll has always found that there is something powerful in writing.

"Precision, prediction, and possibility - this is the future of care." - Futurist Jim Carroll

I'm off to speak at an event today that combines the themes of personalized and predictive medicine, medical device technology, and the future of manufacturing. It should be a great event!

As I open my upcoming keynote, one of the first visuals Iโ€™ll be sharing highlights a core message: medical device transformation and disruption are acceleratingโ€”fast.
This slide sets the stage with four key forces driving this transformation:

Changing relationship with personal health circumstances. Patients are becoming active participants in their care.ย With wearables, digital health platforms, and real-time data, individuals are managing their wellness proactively, not reactively.

New manufacturing design, development, and time-to-market methodologies. Technologies like 3D printing and additive manufacturing are collapsing innovation cycles. Rapid prototyping and agile development mean devices can move from concept to reality faster than ever before.

Acceleration of medical science. Breakthroughs in areas like genomics, bioengineering, and regenerative medicine are reshaping whatโ€™s possible in care. The speed of discovery is feeding directly into smarter, more adaptive devices.

Medical device intelligence. Weโ€™re now embedding AI into the very fabric of medical devices. These tools are no longer passive: theyโ€™re predictive, responsive, and increasingly autonomous in their ability to assist care decisions.

This is the convergence of diagnostics, therapeutics, and innovation.

And it supports the idea Iโ€™ll emphasize throughout the keynote:

โ€œPrecision, prediction, and possibilityโ€”this is the future of care.โ€

Who knows. I might be dancing in the rain!

"๐‘Œ๐‘œ๐‘ข ๐‘›๐‘’๐‘’๐‘‘ ๐‘ก๐‘œ ๐‘Ž๐‘๐‘ก ๐‘–๐‘› ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’ ๐‘š๐‘œ๐‘š๐‘’๐‘›๐‘ก ๐‘ฆ๐‘œ๐‘ข โ„Ž๐‘Ž๐‘ฃ๐‘’!" - Futurist Jim Carroll

One of my main messages yesterday during my keynote was that you need to make the most of the moment if you have one. If a wide variety of trends are suddenly coming together - which they are for medical device technology as they are for many other industries - then you have to move at the speed of the trends. This is a message I often share while on stage.

In that context, I've also been doing a final proofread of ๐‘ซ๐’‚๐’๐’„๐’Š๐’๐’ˆ ๐’Š๐’ ๐’•๐’‰๐’† ๐‘น๐’‚๐’Š๐’ - I suspect we are days away from release. And in one of the chapters, I saw one of the phrases I wrote - "๐‘Œ๐‘œ๐‘ข ๐‘›๐‘’๐‘’๐‘‘ ๐‘ก๐‘œ ๐‘Ž๐‘๐‘ก ๐‘–๐‘› ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’ ๐‘š๐‘œ๐‘š๐‘’๐‘›๐‘ก ๐‘ฆ๐‘œ๐‘ข โ„Ž๐‘Ž๐‘ฃ๐‘’." When you write tens of thousands of words, you sometimes forget the wisdom you wove into just a few of those words.

With that in mind, here's what you need to think about.

You need to commit.

You need to have a compelling sense of urgency.

You have to decide to move forward, not back.

You should have a sense that RIGHT NOW is the right time.

You must be ready to act decisively.

You need to make decisions.

You need to move with the trends as they mature, not as they fade.

Do things. Now.

Get it done - because why should you wait?

Kill indecision - otherwise, it will kill you.

Start doing. Action is better than stasis.

Act faster - because your world is.

Volatility is normal - learn from it.

Think faster. Don't wait for perfect information.

Act more. Momentum is valuable.

Change is inevitable - Indecisiveness isn't.

Because waiting is fatal.

Agility, innovation, and execution are key.

Futurist Jim Carroll admits to having never understood indecision.

At its heart, it's a deep dive into a question I've wrestled with for years:

These aren't your typical self-help books. I designed them to be profoundly fun yet powerfully insightful, challenging you to rethink your approach to achievement without getting bogged down in complex theory. They offer a unique perspective on recognizing the often unconscious "gravitational pull of the ordinary" and then, critically, how to break free. They're meant to be revisited, pondered, and used to continuously challenge your own thinking.

They are getting a fantastic reaction from those who have read them!

If you've ever felt stuck, or wondered what's truly possible for you, I invite you to explore the integrated approach these books offer to finding your path forward. After sampling, you can find the full books on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, or visit the Mediocrity Website for more details.

"Megatrends are the Energizer Bunny of the future. They keep going and going, presenting opportunities for those prepared to act!" - Futurist Jim Carroll

One of the chapters in Dancing in the Rain had to do with the "Megatrends" - something I blogged about way back in May, and again a few weeks ago. Lots of folks asked me to expand on that material, and so ย I'm starting a series that will cover each of the Megatrends. This will run through the next 6 weeks in my Daily Inspiration, interrupted on occasion by things that might be crossing my mind or impacting my life.

I'll be using a new AI-based presentation tool, Gamma.app, to pull together this material. It's good! Here's the Gamma summary of today's material - you'll find the full PDF here.

So why do the megatrends matter? That's because, as I note in the book and today's quote - they're the Energizer Bunny of the future, We might have a downturn, a recession, uncertainty - but the megatrends will keep marching on.

I will be taking a look at each of these trends through the next few weeks, to give you a sense of what's coming, and where the opportunities are. My goal? To get you out of your economic funk and into the mindset of where the big future is going to take us through the next 5 to 10 years! There will also be a Website at megatrends.jimcarroll.com - I just haven't built it yet!

Stay tuned!

Oh, and go and grab those sample chapters!

"The only thing we know for certain about Al is that we don't know exactly where we are going, but we are making great time." - Futurist Jim Carroll

My book Dancing in the Rain features a list of 30 Megatrends. Some folks asked me to expand on them, so I'm starting a new series today.
The first one, AI, obviously doesn't need a lot of explanation.

It's big.

It's fast.

It's not going away.

It's going to impact your life one way or the other.

It's going to have as profound an impact as the Internet has had, both good and bad.

People will endlessly debate about where it will take us.

Some are excited, many are terrified, many are both.

And the sophistication of what we can do continues to accelerate at a ridiculous rate.

As do the risks and the downside.

Ok, so with that out of the way, here's a bit more to think about. First, AI is not some weird futuristic concept - it's a pervasive reality that has already been rapidly transforming our world. I took the liberty of taking one of my recent AI keynotes and had it summarized by Google Gemini. I then fed this to gamma.app - and Megatrends#1ย of how it summarized my work.

The first thing to think about is that from the seemingly mundane to the profoundly complex, AI is already deeply embedded in our daily lives. Take a look around your world - you have::

Wearable fitness trackers analyzing your exercise patterns
Chatbots that instantly answer your questions
Shopping sites recommending products based on your past purchases
Security cameras recognize unfamiliar faces or objects
Music apps creating personalized playlist recommendations
Email services categorize messages and filter spam

And that's just the tip of the iceberg. AI already powers everything around you, from autonomous vehicles and computer vision to natural language processing and virtual assistants. Algorithms are the unseen force behind Fitbits, Apple Health, Predictive Insurance, and just about everything else. In some industries - healthcare, for example - the 'algorithm' does a better job of interpreting critical data than humans do.

But that's not the key thing to think about - it's how quickly all of this is moving. It's the acceleration of everything having to do with AI that we need to think about. The explosion of AI into public consciousness isn't truly sudden. It's the result of several exponential trends converging:
Continuation of Moore's Law: The number of transistors on microchips doubles every two years, leading to ever-increasing processing power.
Collapsing Training Costs: The cost to train AI systems has plummeted dramatically. For example, the cost to train an AI system for image recognition dropped from $112.64 in 2017 to $4.50 in 2021. It's even less today.

It promises to change everything, and if we can adapt, learn, and responsibly innovate, THAT will determine our future in this rapidly evolving landscape.

As I said, we don't know where we are going but we sure are making great time!

In the 1990s, I wrote and co-wrote 34 books about the impact of the Internet, and sold over a million books.

I was eerily accurate.

i just took one book and analyzed a section I wrote about what I called, back then, IP-Chips (Internet protocol chips).

Today, we call it IoT - Internet of Things.

How did I do?

Take a look!

Megatrend #2 of 30 - Ambient Intelligence: "๐ด๐ผ ๐‘–๐‘  ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’ ๐‘–๐‘›๐‘ฃ๐‘–๐‘ ๐‘–๐‘๐‘™๐‘’ ๐‘Ž๐‘Ÿ๐‘โ„Ž๐‘–๐‘ก๐‘’๐‘๐‘ก ๐‘‘๐‘–๐‘ ๐‘ ๐‘œ๐‘™๐‘ฃ๐‘–๐‘›๐‘” ๐‘๐‘œ๐‘š๐‘๐‘ข๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘›๐‘” ๐‘–๐‘›๐‘ก๐‘œย ย ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’ ๐‘ฃ๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘ฆ ๐‘“๐‘Ž๐‘๐‘Ÿ๐‘–๐‘ ๐‘œ๐‘“ ๐‘œ๐‘ข๐‘Ÿ ๐‘™๐‘–๐‘ฃ๐‘’๐‘ ." - Futurist Jim Carroll

Computing is no longer confined to screens and devices-it's vanishing into our physical world. Smart sensors embedded in walls adjust lighting based on your mood, while Al-powered fabrics in clothing monitor health metrics without your awareness. Voice assistants anticipate needs without being summoned, and autonomous vehicles make thousands of decisions invisibly.

This ambient intelligence creates an ecosystem where technology serves us without demanding our attention-the ultimate expression of Al's integration into human experience.

Good or bad? You be the judge - because it's arriving already, sooner than you think.

This trend is kind of near and dear to my heart since I've been speaking and writing about it for almost three decades - albeit in the context of what I call "hyperconnectivity." And back in 2000, in one of the many Internet-related books I was writing at the time, I introduced the concept of the "IP-chip"โ€”a visionary idea of a computer microchip with built-in Internet capabilities, designed to enable seamless global communication between everyday devices.

I took the liberty of feeding a chapter from one of my books from 1999 -ย Light Bubs to Yottabitsย - to an AI app to summarize what I covered, and what I missed. You can access the full PDFย here. It's an interesting read!

lnkd.in/gUKyqfxN

This wasn't just about connecting gadgets; it was about embedding the Internet's universal language, Internet Protocol (IP), directly into the fabric of our world. My predictions (and I wasn't the only one making this one)ย proved remarkably prescient, laying the conceptual groundwork for what we now widely recognized as the Internet of Things (IoT).

My prediction was that these IP chips would be "imminent" and would "invade your home or office in unprecedented numbers" within a decade, fundamentally shifting Internet access away from a primary reliance on personal computers.

Fast forward to 2025, and this vision of hyper-connectivity is undeniably our reality.

But that's only the first step. We're now about to integrate AI directly into all of these 'smart devices,' promising to make them 'smarter.' Good or bad? Will it make them better or worse? A great idea of a massive mistake? Debate rages.

Imagine devices around us that don't just react, but anticipate.

Megatrend #3 of 30 - Human-Technology Integraton - "When technology and human biology merge, the boundaries of what medicine can achieve completely dissolve." - Futurist Jim Carroll

The boundary between technology and biology is blurring with neural interfaces, bio-monitoring, augmentation technologies, and medical device connectivity which we can refer to as bio-connectivity. It creates a new form of hyperconnected medicine, leading to entirely new categories of products, and services, not to mention ethical considerations.

This is a trend near and dear to my heart since I've been covering it in various forms, ever since I wrote a little book in 1997 called Good Health Online! It's also a topic I've covered in dozens of healthcare conferences over the years as a future trend, and it's fantastic to see it finally emerging. Just last week, this topic was one of the four pillars that I covered in a keynote for a major medical device company.

Why is it important? Let's put it this way - with the rapid acceleration of lifestyle disease worldwide, the holy grail for everything in the healthcare system is cost management. That's where the role of medical devices comes in. How about simple iPhone blood pressure and other health heart monitoring? John Hancock, a division of Manulife, offers savings to individuals who enroll in this type of disconnectivity program. It also, on a larger scale, engineers some overall cost savings in the system, negating further spending down the road in the costs of managing complex morbidity disease.

But that's just scratching the surface - here's where this trend takes us, in a slide from deck last week: "The future of health isn't just in our hands; it's on our wrists, around our hearts, and guiding every decision. Smart, connected devices are writing a new chapter where every patient is empowered, and care is truly continuous."

I shared this slide from my deck last week as well - this is where it takes us: "Continuous, real-time physiological data from wearables and implantables will become the new vital signs, allowing for personalized, predictive interventions long before symptoms appear."

At the forefront of this transformation are Wearable Health Devices, driving widespread consumer adoption. The next category is known as the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) - simply put, institutional (hospital, seniors care, clinics) medical devices becoming linked to the Internet. Then there is the even more exciting field ofย Connected Drug Delivery Devices: think of devices that monitor diabetics in real-time and deliver insulin automatically

It's a big trend, and growing bigger!

Megatrend **#4** - Digital Twins: "With a digital twin, we don't just envision the future; we build it, test it, and perfect it, long before it ever touches the real world." - Futurist Jim Carroll

It's one of the most unappreciated but most powerful megatrends with a huge amount of potential. And you might not know it, but it's already being used all around you.

What's it all about? Think of it this way - it involves the creation of virtual replicas that allow for unprecedented simulation, optimization, and predictive capability, involving things like supply chains, buildings, manufacturing processes, and even surgery. in essence, we can figure things out before committing to doing those things. In that way, we can solve previously impossible problems, by testing and simulating them first.

Imagine being able to test out a big, expensive idea without actually building anything. Or fixing a problem in your factory before it even happens. Sounds like science fiction, right? It's not. It's happening right now, and it's changing how businesses operate.

What exactly Is a digital twin?

Think of it as a super-detailed virtual copy of something real. This "something" could be almost anything: a factory machine, an entire building, a complex supply chain, or even, as the quote suggests, a human organ. This isn't just a static picture, though. This digital replica is constantly updated with data from its real-world counterpart. So, if a machine in your factory starts to heat up, its digital twin knows it too, in real-time.

Digital twin technology is already being used in supply chains, building management and design, manufacturing, and more.

What's next? Advancements with personalized healthcare. Digital twins of human organs could allow doctors to test out different treatments for a patient's specific condition virtually, predicting the best course of action without any risk to the patient.ย Entire cities could have digital twins, allowing urban planners to simulate the impact of new infrastructure projects, traffic patterns, and even climate change scenarios.

Why does it matter? Becauseย it gives us unprecedented simulation, optimization, and predictive capability. It's like having a crystal ball for your business or your project. By understanding how things will behave before we make big investments or take significant risks.

Oh, and one more thing.

This stuff is not theoretical. My oldest son is a UAV Practice Manager for a major firm and a GIS / geospatial mapping expert. In a proud dad moment, here's an article he just wrote on digital twin technology in the industry in which he works.

"It's not what you know - it's knowing what you need to know, and knowing how to know it!" - Futurist Jim Carroll

Knowledge has a rapidly shrinking half-life; the volume of knowledge is now doubling at a furious pace. Future opportunity comes from developing just-in-time knowledge capabilitiesโ€”without this skill, you cannot keep up.

You know I've said that before, but let's put a Megatrend spin on this because it is a HUGE trend.

Let's start here. I did a 'research deep dive' on Google Gemini and generated a pretty lengthy report on the future of knowledge. It was based on my original 2023 post on 'knowledge velocity' - which to this day remains one of the most trafficked pages on my Website. I then used gamma.app to pull together this 60-page summary about knowledge trends.

So what's the trend all about? It's quite simple - the world is experiencing an unprecedented acceleration in the creation and obsolescence of knowledge, even faster than what I suggested in 2023, largely driven by advancements in AI and the Internet of Things (IoT). This rapid pace presents a dual challenge for organizations: adapting to the quick decay of existing expertise while preparing for entirely new skill sets and job roles. Interestingly, AI, while a primary driver of this acceleration, also serves as a powerful tool for managing it through advanced knowledge discovery, personalized learning, and augmented human capabilities.
