Being in Canada, we saw a single failed software upgrade bring down cell, Internet, phone, TV service for about 10 million Canadians. Pretty epic moment in tech reliability LOL. I saw someone post that the mere Kubernettes layer on multipel systems at Twitter has 'epic' potential.

I have 5 rules about the future.
The first two are:
1. The future happens, but eventually
2. The future is usually slow, and then, instant

If TW doesn't crash and burn, this might just beocme a nice place for those of us who don't want to go back.
And someone will write a nice little piece of code that will let us follow the news & other accounts we want on Twitter without having to engage

I own a Tesla Model 3 with FSD but am more partial to punk than country.
Very confused at this moment in time with the guy...
Networks die. People move on. It's part of the thing. 40 years, and sort of in this order.
These are ones I've used. I've probably missed some.
BBS's -> The Source -> Compuserve -> BIX (Byte Information Exchange) -> The WELL -> USENET -> AOL -> MySpace -> Then all of a sudden Facebook -> LinkedIn -> Instagram -> Twitter -> TikTok ->Mastodon
I had a LOT of friends on BIX. It was a magical place, and being the Byte Information Exchange (of the magazine) it was heavily tech influenced. It's probably the closest to what I'm seeing in Mastodon at this moment in time.
Classmates seemed to be just a place to look for snarrow info, not a networking home.
Then there's research services - they have history too. The best ones I've used over 40 years are structured info services
For that, I've used Knowledge Network -> Dialog -> Lexis / Nexis -> Dow Jones Faciva

I should also note that as I go down this memory lane, a fellow named John Quarterman who wrote an early Internet book ("The Matrix") around 1990, later established a mailing list called Netscribes. We had about 200 authors of Internet books, newspaper columns, magazines n the list from about 1995 to 2002. @dangillmor was on it. Many are still out there.

That's the progression of networks I've been on over a 40 year span. This is just another network along the way. But a fun one!
I guess what I am trying to get at is the loss of Twitter - if it comes to that - is a tragic, big thing.
But I lost BIX.
I lost the WELL.
Heck, I lost friends on Compuserve.
I had friends on varous BBS systems in 1982.
But I made new ones. New discoveries. New people. New knowledge.
So thrive on Mastodon and follow new people, make new friends, discover new knowledge. find new things.
It's all part of the magic of online.

I was courageous enough to initiate two RFC's. It was quite the experience!
I played with it but it wasn't a big part of what I used. There was also GENIE for a time. Probably a few others; I'd have to dig into my archives.
That part wasn't in order. I was on Twitter I think in 2008 or early '09. TikTok was 2 months ago after my 27 and 29 year old sons told me I was too old for it.

I didn't use AOL much.
I did write an article in my Globe and Mail column when the merger happened. I remember that as a SEISMIC event - things were going crazy dot.com land!
AOL was wonderful in that it brought tens of millions online through that little floppy disk (later CD) mailer thing. They were everywhere!

I've been running my own instance for two weeks. Im thrilled, vanity plate and all. I'm on a 2gb Vultr Ubuntu 22.04, pretty easy to build. Cost will be about $12 a month. It could be 1/2 that if I could have had the compile happen on a 1GB machine but got tired of chasing down the issue.
I totally agre there is going to be a need - and more than likely - explosive growth of single user solutions.

I've got my little Mastodon instance now serving media from my S3 Amazon account. This will help me minimize storage load on my little server; result in asset distribution (images etc) from Amazon endpoints; allow me to not have to purge media.
Next step is to have my media.futurist.info cloudfront distribution kick in.
And after that, Elastic Search so i can search the timeline.

Question for Mastodon geeks.

AWS has always been pretty dirt cheap so I'll watch it. I've got many gigs of other stuff in there and never spend more > $20 a month. So it might be ok.
My CFO (wife) also tends to keep a close eye on these things.
I set out to do this because I wanted to know how it works behind the scene, scales (or doesn't) and more. I've been online since '82 and have always done a ton of this so it helps me understand what is going on. As I often say, I can't talk about the future if I don't geek out with the tech driving the future.
Plus, it's pretty fun!

I've been writing my Daily Inspiration since 08/16. It started out small, but over time, took on a life of its own
I'm now between 4,000 to 6,000 words each workday morning.
I haven't missed on post since August 2016. Not one
Its my moment in the morning usually between 5 and 6am before it is fired out to 12 (!) different social networks and stuff.
The fact I don't drink and am totally alive in the morning probably helps. 😀

- implemented my own Mastodon server so I'm @jimcarroll
- set up an Amazon S3 bucket for cloud storage of media (images, video etc) to reduce server storage/load
- put a Cloudfront CNAME on it so media comes from media.futurist.info
- put Elasticsearch on it so I have form of rudimentary search of my timeline
- made new friends!
The server is costing me about $12 a month.
I was verified for real on Twitter, but going forward, will not spend $8 there
I've on AWS forever.
I do have a business I tend to (speaking) that I need to spend money on.

There is an error in what you use for the setup - in the hostname - use s3. not s3-

Totally agree on that. I think they are like self-driving to this point. A massively impressive display of technology that can boggle our mind. But there not 'there' yet, and to get to 'there' is going to be a massive hill to climb. So the first bit is impressive but not yet full.

Thanks folks. I will have a blog post around this this week. Certainly a lot of food for thought in light of what I've spoken on stage before about how quickly brands can lose their luster.
I follow weather people, science people, space people, geneticists. I read their stuff because its important to me to what I do. I'm actively forcing myself to NOT engage.

The interesting thing is I spoke in Switzerland for a big audience of globa corporate risk managers, and one of my points was that we are on the edge of an era of accelerated reputational risk.

I go back further - 1982 - and have been here many times before. When i first got on two weeks ago I looked around and realized that this is just like 1993 ... Usenet, disconnected networks ... everything all about to expode into the accelerated arrival of the Internet bound by the common protocol of TCP/IP
The same trend - new users /old users - happened then., as did a culture shift on the network
My big concern is whether Mastodon can scale with the architecture it has.
It's crazy the headlines you can wake up to.

I don't have that experience at all on my own instance - my feed is full (my local feed is just me of course, but I don't look there). I just started populating it early by following 50 very different people and that helped me populate it with other very interesting people very quickly.

The other thing is tech vs. culture
Email didn't quite scale - till it did. Usenet didn't scale via uucp, until something else came along.
I think the more interesting thing is that we know great architectures - which Mastodon seems to be - go forward.
But online cultures don't. I was around Usent when we were doing Requests for Comments and there were Acceptable Use Policies -- and then, there weren't, because the architecture - TCP/IP - is what went forward.
Self-inflicted brand implosion - I love the phrase - happens regularly.

I usually start working on it and thinking about it the day before. And then write 4,000 to 6,000 words around it with morning coffee - 3 cups - around 5am.

It's all pretty futile, and people and companies that fight the future ultimately fail!

Way back in 2000, someone tried to sell coffins online – and the funeral industry saw it as a threat.
The funeral industry suggested only they – being properly licensed, accredited, approved – had the expertise to sell coffins.
They failed.
Today, car companies and automotive dealers are arguing the same thing when it comes to Tesla selling cars directly online – ‘it should not be allowed.‘
They'll fail.

I wrote 34 books about the Internet from 93 to '01 and was immersed in it - I was doings of news, TV & radio interviews, and it was astounding the nature of the questions I would get. The scaling was intense - we went from a few hundred thousand online to millions just like that.
1 of 6/ Two days after integrating an S3 bucket with Cloudfront into my solo Mastodon instance, no noticeable increase in local media storage.
This is great!
2 of 6/ A bit of a server spike when I implemented Elasticsearch but it was such a hog I took it out.
3 of 6 / Glances is all green.
4 of 6/ Sidekiq in good shape, again showing the Elasticsearch spike.
I have to work on these "Failed" connections - these seem to be instances that are down or don't exist anymore. I have to learn how to clean that up.
5 of 6/ PGHero is all good, ably assisted by the fact that Rosie seems to be doing some regular vacuuming.
6 of 6/ So I'm happy with my little Mastodon server. This week, exploring #hashtag maintenance, failed connections, server hardening (fail2ban ticking along nicely though), and more.
It backs up every day so I can always go back one day in time.

It has to do with the Daily Inspiration I put out today ... but also to do with the overall theme of accelerating risk, an issue I covered in Lucerne, Switzerland in October.

I've been immersed in the topic of the 'future of risk' for so long, I've got an entire blog category dedicated to it.
And for all of us oldtimers here ... way back in 1985 I started reading Peter Neumann's Risk Digest
Much of what that has covered has come true. Much more yet to come!
The future of risk is clear:
- there's going to be more of it
it's going to come at us with greater speed and intensity
- unless we are watching really carefully, we won't be aware of it until we ahve to deal with it
- there are a lot of risks that are yet to come that we don't yet understand and that we don't yet know how to manage
And in 2023, a key trend that leaders and organizations must manage is the rapid emergence of new risks and escalating risk realities!
IMHO Web 3 was all a bunch of self-serving hype geneated by tech companies and wannabe's trying to get a 'next-big-thing' going.
But there was no there-there.
The impact of using Amazon AWS/Cloundfront on a Mastodon instance is wonderful. 3 days in, no noticeable increase in disk instance usage!
No, just me.
A whole story in my timeline as to why I set up my own.
Pre-Amazon, as a single user, disk usage was growing at a steady state, ie. media storage.

It's not just the 'political classes'
For 25 years, I've been suggesting that any Board of Directors needs to have someone with clear insight into risk issues, particularly tech.
Most companies still don't. They've got legal, audit, exec comp, HR, but no skills on thsi most critical issue.

And the disk usage was just a function of usage. It seems local storage consists of media of stuff of people I follow

I shared keynote duties at an event in Sonoma; it might have been 2013 or so ... he arrived wtih bodyguards in tow, as Twitter was being used a lot throughout the Arab Spring, and some of the things he said put him at risk; there were many real active threats. . The risk was real then, and it is real now.
Naivety might drive the current owner to lofty goals, but the result of everything that is going on will be massively destructive.
Back in the day, I wrote posts and filmed video about the 'economic costs of Covid' and hesistancy.
Read the bullet points as to how regions are imapcted going forward. Some of that is happening - it is REALLY difficult for a region to attract new medical professionals to work if the region is, um in la-la land.

I took up skiing, later in life than most folks, because my wife and I did not want to be hockey parents.
These badges represent a LOT of determination, going from a basic snowplow to skiing the Swiss Alps. Whistler, Aspen and more.
It is by far one of the smartest decisions we have ever made.
(Also, our little ski hill is home to many Olympians, including Jack Crawford who won bronze last year and just won #3 on World Cup last week)

I've spent a lot of time on a lot of stages talking about 'customer oriented innovation' or 'upside down innovation.' Smart companies came to learn they could use social media to discover what their customers were doing with their products and how they could build innovation ideas from that. LOTS of examples.
It's not a one way thing - corporate presence needs to be two way.

Is there anything in Mastodon world similar to Periscope or live Twitter video feeds? Curious. I keep peeling back the layers of this open world.

I had several goals/drivers for hosting my own:
- it's the only way I can really understand the guts of Mastodon; just being a user doesn't let me learn much
- I'm a Linux user so I can se some of the internals, & add on stuff that's out there
- it's only $12 a month, not a big stretch. I've got media going to an S3 bucket via Cloudfront so storage is not an issue
- 800 followers but little bandwidth usage
- I'm not at risk of some random instance I join going down

I don't think the tech will be your issue; it will be the bandwidth and the scaling, i.e. how well the peering works. It will be interesting to watch.

I had to do a server restore since while working on some client things, I was also playing around with fail2ban, and mucked things up to a sufficient degree that my system was blowing up. So I went back to yesterday
Things I lost:
- followers - the count went down. I don't know if this comes back up as these lost people see my posts again
- and I'm not sure if people I started following yesterday are still in my follow list. I suspct not
And I didn't do a snapshot before going back 24 hrs!
And so this is how you learn.
Failure. It's the path to success.
Particularly when it comes to Linux.
Blow it up, restore, repeat.

I still like my crazy old Canon G2 from 20 years ago and use it on occasion, because I like the way the swivel screen would let me get it into hard to access areas.
Then again, I also have an MP3 player from 1997 that can hold about 4 songs, so I might just have deep psychological issues.

It's a desire, not a trend.
I think vast numbers of them don't plan on coming back, at least on any sort of full-time basis, and the corporate world has to align with the increasing likelihood of that reality and plan accordingly.
You'll come to realize that they are in control.

- companies want people to go back to work – they’ve had enough
- many employees don’t want to go back – they like the freedom, lifestyle, and time saved

I remember speaking at a major manufacturing conference in 2017 and referencing the Model 3 scale-up in my keynote. The Q&A was filled with dubious remarks from highly intelligent manufacturing and automotive engineers and executives who were doubtful he could pull it off. I remember, in detail, indicating why I thought he would. He did.
He won’t this time. At least, not in any way that will earn any respect from any decent human being.

Smart weather minds might chime in. This map is of temps at 5,000 feet predicted for that time period, so certainly warmer over the pole; not necessarily at ground level. I've heard weather people talk of polar stratopheric warming that leads to this type of pattern ('stratwarm') but don't know enough about it.
A dumb question if I may.
When I do a search on my little solo-user instance, I get a bunch of results.
How did they get there - these are mostly people I don't follow. I guess they showed up in the Federated timeline at some point? And to that end, what ends up in my Federated timeline - I'm presuming it's just based on instances from people I'm following, and that it just keeps growing over time?
So many questions...

Pretty cheap.
And I'm barely scratching bandwidth!
I could have done this in 1/2 the cost of that if I could have got it to to the compile in 1GB of memory.
All new risk now happens faster. And no one is prepared for that.
So most folks don't know what new risk is coming at them. And they don't know how to respond when it hits.

On this whole jet location thing.
I run 4 Raspberry Pi's with ADS-B dongles; 2 at my home, 2 at my chalet. They pick up publically broadcasted ADS-B signals from any plane in line of sight from the antennae; the software then uploads this to Flightaware, RadarExchange, FlightRadar24, ADSBExchange, Planefinder. It's a fun hobby.
This stuff has been going on for years. This guy just took the public data and put it to tweets.

It's a plane. It puts out ADS-B. Planes do that. That's how the ATC works.
Some people use this data to figure out when it is overhead and get their long lens camera out to get a photo.

Back in '92, we had the FreeNet movement dedicated to those aims; I was on the Board of the Toronto FreeNet for a time.
But for me, 20 years on, it was not 'what server to use' but 'which cloud provider will I place my personal instance on?' Right now I'm on Vultr, with Ubuntu. Also playing with Hetzner.
I expect we will see 1-button cloud deployments <$8 month within 6 months.
One thing I've learned about everything is to never discount the opportunity for anything.

Excellent stuff! I've done pretty much the same with S3 and Cloudfront; but in my case, coming out of a Vultr Ubuntu 22.04 server. I hit the same memory issue trying to compile; 2GB minimum was required.
I did it for the same reason - to understand how this works and scales in the back. I've learned lots and eager to learn more.
The IAM usage did intrigue me; that's something I can't do. On the other hand, I'm on fail2banned up

Last but not least - I did add my first relay yesterday but see no appreciable traffic spike.
Have just successfully moved email for my Mastodon instance away from Mailgun ($21 month, test setup that I forgot about) into my Amazon SES email setup. If you don't know the latter - super crazy cheap SMTP mailout; I've already been using it for my Daily Inspiration Sendy mail list.

I tried to install ElasticSearch on my little solo server, and CPU usage spiked to 200%. Some folks have commented that it is a beast for resource usage; sort of the dot.net of the Interrnet world.
Also, if there are folks who are looking to create their own instance using their own domain name - there are a bunch of us who have done the #selfhosting thing.
My cost is about $12 a month.

- Vultr Ubuntu 22.04 server
- 2GB memory, 50GB, 3,000GB traffic
- media on Amazon AWS via Cloudfront on a CNAME. Cloudfront free for low load, AWS dirt cheap
- mail is via Amazon SES which is probably, seriously, about a penny
- cost is about $14 a month

I just followed the docs. I tried to do it with 1GB but that was a chip too few LOL. I've been using AWS for a long time so that part was straightforward. If you know 'nix you should be able to do it.

Not really. I just do real research, think a lot, get to talk to a lot of CEOs and other people. I've been right on a lot of things over a 35 year time span. Some of the trends are easily predictable but blinders cause people to be in denial. So when NASA had me in and I painted a picture of space exploration in 2020 - commercialized, new entrants, new tech - many astronauts were in denial. Years later, well, here we are.
Also, your profile links with the <a rel= ... are done wrong. You need to actually bury that code in the Web site ... and I don't think you can do that with Facebook and Youtube. Certainly not Medium (I've tried).

You would not believe the setups my two sons have. One has an entire smart garden irrigation system built into HA on top of all the other home stuff.

Nothing to report her like what you have. I do dump up to Amazon s3 for object storage; it might be your initial install of that. You might consider a command level sync to speed it up: in my case, it's like this:

I also run glances, which gives a bit of insight into how things are going.
Are retries backed up? I often find that servers which are offline get queued up ... anything there? I have yet to understand how / when these connectons time out.
But I always have a bunch and there doesn't seem to be a performance hit.

Somehow there is a really cool Venn diagram buried in here somewhere.
I'm on a cloud (vultr, $12 a month). I considered doing it on an old PC here, and it worked, but too many hassles with port forwarding and stuff since I already have some home automation and other stuff hanging off the cable modem.
I recently installed on a Hertzner virtual server at $6 a month and it seemed to work well.
If you know Linux, once its installed, not much effort at all.
Stick to your brand.
Always.
Never waiver.
It's your message.

Here's the cost of my single user instance so far.
I can probably do it cheaper as server costs decline. I'm on Vultr, but did a successful build on something smaller at 1/2 the cost. Once assets are deployed to Amazon S3, the server size of 50GB seems fine. I'm at 1/2 that, and I thik I just need to clean out some old pre-CDN stuff.
Here's the big problem I have with Mastodon.
- there are far too many interesting people
- there is far too much diversity of interest
- there is a reality of following too many people
- everyone is posting such interesting stuff.
I'm seriously not getting stuff done since my timeline is alive. I am following too many people, but wow, the short little bios just draw you in.

I've been following @davew since forever, and always know RSS is the most underappreciated technology. I think I might start doing what you do. The thing is, I need a really kickass RSS program for OS/X and haven't found one yet.
I used FirstClass - I think I was in and around it from about 89 to 92. Great product!
Twitter became a huge science/weather/business/medical trend tool for me, and this approach would make sense; one account for my social/research life, and one for my hardcore research life.

What I'm seeing with him is what I've seen with a few friends. I had one really close friend, intelligent guy, tech - brilliant really. And then, through Covid, he lost it. Off into conspiracy land. hatred towards libs, hatred towards vaccines, hatred against science. This is a highly intelligent guy - and boom, his mind is gone.

I started working on a research project after the Twitter announcement; dug into several thousand articles about CEO arrogance. I sat on the research for months, and then finally went through it - stories on 40 years of CEO arrogance and hubris.
And I summarized it into this chart and post.
I knew he had issues. CEO arrogance and hubris is common. It never ends well.
Full on disappearance down the rabbit hole is something else altogether.

That has not been a thing yet. But I can tell you that my audiences changed around late 2015. I wonder why!
I began to carefully explain it on stage by insisting that we are in a world of the Jetsons and the Flinstones. Lots of the latter around.

This video was from 2009. I was alerting the client - in this case, the global leadership team for Yum! Brands - so KFC, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, etc - that social media was going to have a HUGE impact on their brand perception (it did).
Today, its more challenging and happens even faster.
Head down the road to Kilmachomtas; that's where 3 brothers left in 1749 for Nova Scotia, and are my distant relatives - and we are still in touch with distant relatives in Kilmacthomas today!
Oh gosh, there are a gazillion reasons why brands are under more pressure; speed just makes things worse faster.
But overall, it comes down to simple stuff. Don't be a brand that does dick things.
It's my goal to get over there. I've flown over Ireland dozens of times, but have never been!
For what it is worth, I predicted the Tesla business model in '03 at a leadership event with DaimlerChrysler in Stuutgart - I was brought in to shake up their complacency. The laughed at me.
I've been covering the company on stage for 15 years, long before it hit the public conciousness.
But like I said, I never had this on my bingo card.

I'm a member of a little ski club north of Toronto; we have a number of 'private' ski clubs here. 1,000 foot vertical, but more than our fair share of Olympians and World Cup racers; in fact, the Bronze downhill last year was won by a fellow from our club, and I often ski a World Cup Racer Larisa Yurkiw.
We are small but mighty. Also, eastern skiers know how to ski on ice!
(I've skied lots of big mountains too, Vail, Aspen, Snowmass, Whistler, Grindelwald, etc)

Been at this for 6 years. It's become a bit of a 'thing.' It really defines my day!
I've lost several friends to the insanity, including one long time very close friends.
When I think about them - they're just angry. I think they are addicted to anger. It's like an addiction to drugs or booze, but in some ways worse. They chase conspiracy theories to feed their madness and elevate their anger. It's an endorphin of anger. It's just so sad. And we have to just wathc it happen. It's like losing a loved one.

There were 264 individual posts in my Daily Inspiration theme this year. I'm at 1,644 total since I began this silly little thing in August 2016.
One each and every workday. I have not missed ONE day since I started.
I think it might be a bit of an obsession!
So . if you are running an instance .. your log files EAT space
On my little 50GB self-hosted single user instance, I noticed disk space kept disappearing despite the fact my media goes to S3 buckets.
It's the LOGS!
Do:
journalctl --disk-usage
to see usage
Then
sudo journalctl --rotate
&
sudo journalctl --vacuum-time=1week
to clear anything older than 1 week out.
Magic. New space! I got 6GB back. That's a lot for my 50GB server!
This is for Ubuntu. Yours might differ.

Ski season 2022 was a lot of fun. All 2 1/2 days of it. We've gone from bone chilling and dangerous cold to 54 Fahrenheit or 12 C. Wild weather volatility is the new normal.
I am working not to try to be grumpy. but it is pretty maddening
The first photo is from this morning. The second photo is from three days ago.
My potential $8 spend on it has gone instead to my $12 spend on having my own Mastodon instance. Plus, I was real verified since Biz and I hung out a bit. Not paying for it!
Oh, and I own a Tesla. I'm pretty pissed!

In fact, I suspect I'll be out for my normal 630AM 7km walk to watch the sun rise in splendour. That is, if the clouds clear.
