Do you think Mastodon will evolve to be used for biz accounts?
Interesting topic to debate.
I thought I'd explore the idea of having an account that is limited to posting the stuff I write about trends, the future, innovation, creativity for those that might want to follow it, without cluttering up the personal timeline thing.
Mastodon seems to have a more chill culture so this type of thing might be someting to explore.
The whole onboarding to Mastodon thing is interesting.
I wanted to do my own instance/hosting, so I used a domain name I had kicking around, beingoblio.com
Now I think I'm deciding I want to move it all over here.... @jimcarroll seems to work better.
So that will be my next step! Better to do it soon rather than later!
I'll start working on that tomorrow!

I thought for a break during lunch I'd roll out serving media assets via Amazon s3.
Got it configured ok, but some addressing problems. Will fix later. Back to work on preparing on my 2023 trends summary.

Ok, doke, I can confidently say that Mastodon is very well architected for migrating from one account to another.

I am now firmly ensconed in my new home @jimcarroll
There was some whackiness with 'rate limiting' and all kinds of beeping going on as followers were moved over and I might have lost some along the way, but so far, things seem ok.
Whew!
10 days ago, I was struggling with Nginx permission issues on my new Vultr Mastodon single instance setup and wasn't yet into this world.
Now, I seem to be pretty expert at the back end of this thing.
Fun times!

All my followers and follows came over though. That's the main stuff. Plus I still have an archive of my old posts.
Bottom line: You CAN move to another server if you aren't happy with your current Mastodon host/server and NAME. It works very well.
Bottom line 2: THINK about having your own instance. For me, having futurist.info as the key domain for my setup is a game changer.
I'm happy.
Migration in action. Lots of follower beeping as they moved. Lots of rate limiting - still don't know what that was about.

I'm on a Vultr Ubuntu 22.04, decided to do my own thing to learn under the hood. Pretty happy with it all. Started on s3 external today and had to abandon due to some addressing issues.
I did that. Looks like they all came over. Super thrilled with how it worked. I made a snapshot of both Ubuntu servers so that if didn't work, I could reset.
My kids (now 27 and 29) thought that when I was in a command prompt (from a windows environment) that it was a game. They could never figure out how to play, the objective., I told this as a story from the stage for years.
I've only been here a week so not a big loss for losing posts but it would be important going forward. I do have an archive of them from an export.
I suspect a lot of people will want to migrate in the future - they set up on some xyz-mastodon server, and want a better/different address/host/home

Why have you not built your own instance? It's pretty straightforward. You are in control.
And we all said the same thing about the Internet and scale in '93 but ... it scaled. (And then some)
Where is that .. in user admin or server admin?
I have my own Mastodon instance, for just me. So my Mastodon/domain is something better. Plus, I get a great sense fo what goes on under the hood. Plus, I'm responsible for server uptime for me, so I do a good job. (-;
Doing this, you aren't reliant on the stability of whatever Mastodon host you are signed up to.
The Mastodon docs say that post migration is not 'yet' supported, but there must be a way at database level.
I'm not findig much maintenance/support invovled. And the server admin (me) responds to ticket requests from me pretty fast. (-;
Still looking for someone who knows the secret to embedding the Mastodon verification code in Substack or Medium.

I guess I will see. All my followers did come over pretty fast as with those I follow, so that was pretty effective - my timeline is instantly full.
I think 'boosting' points might refederate me (new word!) ....
I like how the old server has an auto follow message.
I'll leave that up for a bit and then nuke the old server in a month or two.
I know you can do it with hashtags. Click this thing and then pin it.

It's not too late at all.
I got onto Mastodon last week with my own server, using a spare domain I had kicking around (beingoblio.com)
Today I moved it over to my @futurist.info domain and will settle in here. All my followers/followees came over with the migration, but not my posts.
So I think there is an identity/vanity plate thing happening here.
For all those wondering what is going to happen with the bird site, one thing that i know about the future from relentlessly studying the past.
Hell hath no fury like regulators scorned.
European DSA and other laws exist. One can't make them magically go away. And if you can't comply, well. hell hath no fury.

I've put one out every single morning since a personal crisis impacted me at the end of July '16. I have not missed one single work day - even if I've been on a plane over the Atlantic or Pacific. It's my 'morning motivation' - sets the tone for my day!

I was legit verified back in '13 or so because I had done a number of keynotes with Biz Stone and he DM'd the verify team. I'm not paying $8 for a tick LOL. And instead putting the $8 to my $12/month self-hosting server.
I'm still on Twitter @jimcarroll -I read it for news and science folks I follow. But other than my Daily Inspiration autopost, I'm not engaging.
But it wasn't real wealth. It was hyper-inflated hype-driven pretend money. Most crypto has been. Play money.

Well I did write someting into my 25 Trends for 2025 some years ago - back in 2014. Check #24. I put it in there simply to make a point that no one is ever guaraneed a future.

Just saw your Canadian connecton.
This was my first Internet book in '93. Three weeks after release, it was #1 in the Globe and Mail and National Post. That's why i keep saying that right now here is like 93.
My co-author and I ended up writing 34 and sold a million books. The growth online was explosive.
And I think we had Finger in the original book!

The crazy thing is just below that section on Finger, we scrambled moments before publication to get in this section on this new thing called The World Wide Web and Mosaic.
Canada specific tips from back then, or with regard to today?
There were 7 editions of the Canadian Internet Handbook; we basically wrote a whole new book every year; we covered such things as the attempt by Elections Canada to stifle election talk online (LOL), Electronic Frontier Canada, the FreeNet movement and tons more. It's really a bit of a historical work. All 34 books are over on a bookshelf to the right of me.
This is just so wild.
As someone involved in history of computing ... would it be of any interest that I've kept most of the email I've sent and received since 1982?

I told my wife one day I should donate it 100 years after my death to some historical archive somewhere. I don't imagine what i have is common.

I'm finding lots of us here. I cut my teeth on a 300 baud acoustic coupler modem on a TRS-80 Model 3 into local BBS, and then the Source and Compuserve, eventually Usenet. I did a lot of X.400 stuff back when MCI and others were trying to interop email; I remember looking at X400 vs. @addressing on the Net, and realizing the CCITT path was over with.
Maybe we crossed paths.
I still have my TRS Model 100 downstairs. 32Kb of memory laptop!

Forgot to post my Thanksgiving story!
In 2019, I discovered that my biological grandfather was a stunt motorcyle rider.
Also true: apparently he wasn't very good at it.
Because I learned that he actually died in 1925 in a ring-of-fire stunt ride that did not, um, go well. My dad was only 3 at the time and left without a father.
Hell of a story that I only learned in 2019. I wrote about it here.
Needless to say, I don't own a motorcycle.
I can proudly say that I stopped using spreadsheets at Lotus 1-2-3 after starting with Visicalc, and never had to endure the world of Excel or Numbers.
I once wrote a pension fund analysis in 1984 that involved 34 linked Visicalc sheets that took 7 days to run to analyze 750 plans.
It cured me.
Of interest to OS/X users.
Did I ever mention I built a virtual broadcast studio in my home?
