Criticism, especially when it is unwarranted, is the foundation of much-lost opportunity. When it is internalized far too much, it becomes the crucible of missed success. When it becomes an obsession rather than a fleeting thought, it becomes the platform for many failed initiatives - simply because it can hold us back from starting to do what we need to do. Criticism can slow us down, distract us, misfocus our minds, and mess with our goals.
It's not good for us - unless we choose to make it so.

As AI envelopes the world in 2023, everyone is enamored, stunned, fascinated, and overwhelmed by what they can do with tools like ChatGPT and the entire software ecosystem that is exploding around it. There is certainly a lot going on - but if you really want to understand the future, you should know that there is a LOT more going on.
The image above is from my keynote just before the pandemic for the World Bank in Morocco. The IFC Global Manufacturing Conference brought together manufacturing executives and economic development executives from around the world for a wide-ranging look at the future of the sector; my job was to define and put in perspective the trends that would do that. AI was very much on the agenda and within the core of my talk, because already at that time, AI was playing a huge role in redefining everything we know about the world of manufacturing.
What's the point I'm trying to make? It's this - yes, there is a LOT going on with AI, but there is so much more going on that you might not even be aware of.
And so back to the construction industry, which I covered in my AI Megatrends series last week. Spending is going from $6.2 billion in 2022 to $181 billion by 2030. Not much of that has to do with ChatGPT but has to do with everything else!
I just spent two days pulling this together while working on many other things.
The tone needs to be this way; this is the nature of the industry I work within. We have but microseconds to capture attention spans. I have the same speaker agents as Barack and Michelle Obama, George Bush, and Richard Branson. When I put something out there, I need to be at the top of my game.

I spent the better part of two days - while working on many other projects - putting it together. it took so long because every time I made a change (typo, video error) it had to 'recompile' or 'reassemble,' which takes a lot of processing time. It takes a level of attention to detail that is not really my skill set; it's not one of my strengths.
The video itself plays to one of my real strengths - my real superpower - and that is relating the future to the key strategic issues that a CEO needs to address today.
As you watch it, you might get a sense that I'm specifically playing to the CEO or senior executive crowd; this is not a video aimed at the average person. You might get a sense that my core focus is corporate offsite meetings and events, not the traditional conference circuit. And that it's all about aligning AI with business strategy.
That's my strength. What I've learned is this: Share your story. Don't hold back. Don't be shy. And as you do so, play to your strengths.

In this year of "All AI all the time," we need to realize that the AI trend is even bigger than all of us think. This time, I dug out some fascinating numbers to emphasize the point. Maybe everyone is thinking too small! Here are some points to ponder.
Spending on AI in manufacturing is going to go from $6.6 billion in 2022 to $178 billion by 2030. Little of that has to do with ChatGPT.
Spending on AI in healthcare, medical sciences, and pharma was about $10 billion in 2022 but is expected to be between $87.4 billion and $177.4 billion by 20230. Little of this has to do with ChatGPT.
Spending on AI in insurance is going from $2-3 billion in 2022, to between $30.7 billion and $67.9 billion by 2030. Little of this has to do with ChatGPT.
Spending on AI in the construction industry? From $1.3-2.1 billion in 2022 to between $11.9 billion and $23.1 billion by 2030. Little of this has to do with ChatGPT.
I have similar numbers for virtually every other industry.

The story of the FutureBeat.Team is the inspiration for today's Daily Inspiration! I'm a corporate futurist guy outside of Toronto, Canada, with insight into the trends that define the future. Tom is the rockstar-drummer corporate team builder guy (ex of the 80s band Scritti Politti), based in London, England, with the proven skill of getting boring corporate events out of their boredom and into the energy.
The two of us could not be more different, and yet, perhaps so alike.

To be a leadership speaker is to be someone who gets to witness the dysfunction that often holds back an organization from pursuing the future. And in fact, it is often a valuable window into the very organizational sclerosis within the organization that leads to a lack of success going forward. The very process through which an organization inquires and talks with you about the possibility of having you speak at a leadership event or meeting is a pretty interesting one - because it gives you a window into their corporate soul.
And that corporate soul is often a very dark, very complex, and extremely dysfunctional place!

Nothing great was ever achieved through relentless negativity! Innovative organizations don't succeed when there are a lot of negative vibes; they succeed when there is positive energy for new ideas. They don't succeed in an environment of persistent pessimism; they excel when there exists a culture of relentless optimism. Great ideas never flourish when pessimists are in control. Motivational leadership never happens when a demotivating spirit is in charge. It happens within the boundless enthusiasm driven by the rocket fuel of positivity.
Positive people see through the veneer of false, boastful leadership; negative people fall into the cult of delusion, the madness of hate, the petty vindictiveness of grievance, believing that the wave of the arm of a false idol can make things great again.
Positive people give off positive vibes. Negative people are simply a drag to be around.
Positive people lift you up - negative people drag you down.

I got kind of excited yesterday while thinking about this quote since I think I finally might have figured out who I am.
I am a multipotentialite.
The revelation came about when someone new followed me on Mastodon - it's a social network that is drawing the interest of many people who no longer want to spend time on the hateful, racist sludge that Twitter has now become. The individual, @Curiosa2Blue featured the short tagline in their bio: "Many interests - never enough time." For someone like me, that is rocket fuel for thought! The phrase grabbed me, shooked me, and took me for a walk - I rolled it around in my mind while out for a round of golf yesterday.
So I came up with a variation of my phrase .. and then Googled it to make sure I wasn't using a phrase that was already common. It was not - but it led me into a new rabbit hole that grabbed my attention of people who possess what is known as multipotentiality!
What? I must admit I have never heard this phrase before, but Wikipedia tells me this:
A multipotentialite is a person who has many different interests and creative pursuits in life. Multipotentialites have no “one true calling” the way specialists do.
Or, as my wife said, "a jack of all trades, a master of none." I decided to dig into the phrase through my research database and this

I'm often asked about the impact of technologies like AI and robotics on careers going forward.
It's not just that your future changes - it's that the essence of your relationships changes forever! Relationships don't get replaced, but they fundamentally change.
In fact, centuries-old relationships are changing.
Relationships matter.
So too does your ability to accept how they are changing.
Morning mood: the CNN situation makes it pretty clear that as Canadians, we're going to have to think about what it is going to be like living next to a brutal dictatorship with the disappearance of the rule of law, complete compromise of the courts, and probably mass executions, prison camps, and a flood of refugees coming to our border. It seems inevitable that this is where America is headed. We are witnessing the death of democracy in real-time. The media is once again going to aid and abet it's destruction in a race for ratings
As you might guess, I'm in a pretty pissy mood this morning.
@ivory there does not seem to be an intuitive way to get to my own timeline from here. If I click on settings, it does not seem to be a way to get there.

I've also had three situations in the last two weeks where Canadian families I know living in the US with young children are actively planning to move back home because they cannot bear the thought of sending their young children to school.
As someone who spends their time on stages at conferences and events in cities, like Las Vegas, I'm coming to realize it's only a matter of time before there is a mass shooting in some conference facility somewhere. Now, during stage check, I examine the stage layout to determine where I will try to escape to.
I have long been thinking as to what Canada should do when the inevitable flood of refugees starts to cross into our border, seeking safety. I thought the 21st-century would be marked by progress. It's likely to witness the destruction of what was once a great country.
Being 64, I'm coming to accept that my remaining years will probably be characterized by an active and ongoing Civil War south of us. This probably means winter trips to the Caribbean and elsewhere for sunshine and not to the traditional locations of Arizona and Florida.
You might not like my comments, but I can tell you that this is what a lot of Canadians now think. We watch in horror as events unfold there. The CNN situation just crystallized our disbelief and horror
We all just witnessed a group of Americans applauding and cheering sexual assault.
It's difficult to reconcile that in my mind that's just for starters it's only a matter of time before they would applaud and cheer mass executions in a public square.
I keep thinking people think the rule of law is going to save them. But it doesn't seem like it will. And even if any charges do come, they will probably use this as a means to increase their support even further.
That is the destruction of the rule of law right there.

My mood gets even worse as I think about all this this morning. But the CNN situation just crystallized how bad it is and how much worse it is going to get.

@PaulKidd I proposed to my wife at the base of Franz Josef Glacier in the south island 34 years ago. It's on my bucket list to go back. If my kids weren't living here, that might be a thought to stay there.
Obviously, I know how to get to the timeline within the app. I'm talking about getting to the timeline from the settings. This is often useful when trying to find posts within a thread that I've done. There's no way to get there from this
@spradlig I spend a lot of time talking about demographics from the stage. I think the opportunity of that change comes later than the engineering of the courts and the blatant attempts at theft. Hence, by the time they are dominant, they're move disenfranchised. Just IMHO.
@Dragon@mstdn.ca Ya, have to agree with you sadly. It's a worldwide thing. I did keynote duties with Anne Applebaum at an event in Switzerland last year and stayed to listen to her. The insight is chilling, and it's global.
I joined Mastodon 6 months ago today. I started out on another instance but soon decided I wanted my own little instance, just for me, because I wanted to commit to it here. So, @jimcarroll
A few things I've learned along the way.
1. I like it here. I have no intention of leaving.
2. I like the oldtimers here. It feels like the late 80s / early 90s at times
3. I like all the new people here. It feels like 2023 and gives me hope
4. I followed a bunch of random people to start. That filled out my timeline
5. The timeline is pretty rich and diverse - it teaches me that randomness of insight is a powerful thing
6. I keep following most people who follow me - some are irresistible follows, and others fit into my 'random is good' insight discovery
7. I don't follow you if you followed me but don't have a bio/profile! BIO, people - fill it out!
8. I modified my #selfhost server so I could do 1500 characters! That seems to be a good balance
9. I think I have learned more about LGBTQ here than I ever knew, and I have deep respect for the community
10. I only go back to the other site for weather info and airplane geeks
11 . There's also a thriving AI community/news info that I need to get there
12. I won't shut down my name there because I don't want someone else to take it
13. I don't post there
14. I try to engage here as much as possible. Engagement is key.
15. I try to practice kindness. I remind myself of my "Social Media Serenity Prayer" before I post

49. Overall, the last six months have been a powerful and useful investment, for my personal growth, knowledge, discovering new stuff, learning to understand and respect new communities, and just revel in the fact that a social network can be kind and wonderful and useful all at the time time.

I have never met anyone who has successfully, without significant mental trauma, printed a greeting card that folds properly, or, as the software and hardware companies suggest with their phrasing, print a 'two-sided card.'
I was reminded of this fact that one day last week when a neighbor of mine sent a message asking for help; she had prepared a wonderful photo collage for her daughter and needed some help figuring it out. I quickly advised her that this was not my department; that I had a rather difficult and perhaps hateful relationship with printers! I sent my wife over instead. And I was reminded of this Saturday when I created a Mother's Day card for my wife - we long ago agreed that we wouldn't spend money on traditional cards. With that in mind, I didn't bother to attempt to create a foldable card. I simply printed a single-sided piece of paper as seen above - problem solved!
My family has known for quite some time not to get me involved in the printing department.

Many people spend their time waiting for clarity - clarity that never comes.
Many executives are waiting for the uncertainty around us to end - when the fact is, uncertainty is our new normal.
Many of those same executives are unable to make a decision when letting indecision become a foundation for your action is now one of the worst things you can do.
All of this flowed the first version of this post: "The first step in getting ready for the future is to know about it. The second step is making the decision to actually do something about it!" The more I thought about it after getting it ready yesterday afternoon, the more I realized it all had to do with the attitude that 'we'll just wait and see!' What do great leaders do?
They don't 'wait and see.' They act, despite the fact they often can't see!
They never let anyone say, 'We'll just wait and see.'

So you go back and look at your Daily Inspiration archives - what is approaching 7 years of Daily Inspiration posts! - and you come to realize that you have a bit of a thing for the power of the imagination.

That's where we are with AI at this very moment, and it is fastening to watch!
How fast is AI moving? A few weeks ago I mentioned a Website that didn't exist 6 months ago - that featured 5,500+ AI tools Oh, wait, that was two weeks ago. I just checked it again on Monday when I did a mailout to my speaker bureau partners, and it's up to 9,000 This morning, 3 days later, it's up to 9,500 tools.
The result? The word ‘*overwhelmed’* is quickly coming to define anything having to do with AI – new stuff is coming at us at a blistering pace, and organizations and executives are feeling like they exist in an absolute firehose of new ‘stuff.’ This means that, essentially, we are here:

Lots of people are suddenly scared of AI, convinced that their jobs and careers are now at risk. They're doing it wrong. Instead of shrinking in fear, they should be thinking more forward - how will I use these new tools to enhance my career and job opportunities?
Job loss? You've seen the articles - there are hundreds of them, all predicting that we will soon see massive job cuts as ChatGPT and other technologies wreak their havoc and destruction. Countless surveys indicate that people believe that job losses are imminent, already happening, or have already occurred.
But maybe everyone is doing it wrong. Take a look at the post to go back in time!
What's the point? As with all aspects of our technological revolution of the last 100 years or so, there are several key trends:
- some jobs will disappear
- new jobs will evolve
- some old skills will go out of date
- new skills will emerge
- the folks who win in this great transition will be those who develop those new skills and evolve into those new jobs and careers
So if you are running in fear instead of chasing opportunities - you are doing it all wrong!
I shot 77 today, my lowest score ever. Our course is shortened with the rebuilding of some holes, but it was still a fantastic round!
It happened during PGA Week, with the PGA Tournament in Rochester. That still remains one of my favorite events over a 30-year career, when I was invited in to talk to over 500 golf professionals about the future of the sport.

It's truly a glass half full / half empty situation!
Where others see negativity, you perceive opportunity. Someone else's peril is your pathway to success. The insurmountable problem faced by others is seen by you as a massive opportunity.
Mindset matters, and turning problems into opportunities is the key. Pogo long ago caught this mindset in the comic strip:
‘We are faced with insurmountable opportunities.’
Think about that - it's a massive admission of helpless defeat - but the embedded contradiction in the phrase is meant to get you thinking.
Because your ability to perceive opportunity literally defines your opportunity.

Successful CEOs aren't in the business of chasing shiny new toys - they need to chase growth!
And so they're having a heck of a year already as everyone comes at them with ideas around this year's hottest new shiny toy - AI!
My post the other day about the rapid growth in the number of AI tools and ideas drew interest from several readers who pointed out this is the dilemma they are already facing as CEOs. (I have a diverse group that follows my daily posts.) I certainly appreciate their challenge - because the history of leadership is one of having to carefully balance the enthusiasm of their team for chasing hot new trends with the reality of the need for strategic purposes.
Never has this situation become more real than it is today with AI.
It's pretty clear that right now, with an increasing interest in the topic, private equity managers are looking for insight that helps them to assess where they are going with their own investments and interests; the CEOs in their portfolios are struggling with the same issues; and overall, CEOs everywhere are in the same boat!
Without a strategic purpose, there is no purpose!
And the essence of leadership is finding the strategy within the hype.

The operating mindset for Silicon Valley has long been to 'most fast and break things.' That philosophy has defined much of the success of many a startup, but we've recently seen the wreckage with the results of the hype around crypto, Bitcoin, and Web 3.0. The same thing is now unfolding with Ai - everything is moving fast, and certainly, we are going to witness a lot of damage as they break things.
That's why I prefer a variation of the phrase that I've defined, 'move fast and chase things.' It implies that in an era of fast change, it's a good idea to turn on your imagination machine and explore hard! My philosophy since generative Ai exploded onto the scene last summer was that I was going to take on a role in interpreting what it all means for my clients. Part of the art of doing that is by 'chasing things' -- moving fast to work with all the emerging tools and trends to gain a better understanding of what it all really means.
The result is that while I continue to do my regular research (news articles, scientific summaries, research reports), it also means working with various AI tools to see where I might integrate them into my own workflow. With that in mind, many of my day-to-day hours are spent working with, playing with, trying out, and assessing a variety of new AI tools.

Where do I find inspiration for my Daily Inspiration? Often it is found in the research I'm doing, the trends I'm watching, and the innovations I'm seeing. Other times, the thought pops into my head while I'm walking or golfing or just being. And in other cases, the genesis of the idea comes from a post that I see online from a friend or an acquaintance. That's the case with today's post - I saw my good friend Nick Engels, a
strength coach that I interviewed for my book Now What: Reinvention and the Role of Optimism in Finding Your Next Future. Based in South Africa, I saw him post this bit of brilliance one day as he worked a friend through some challenges.

AI dominates the world of healthcare and every other industry - and people are suddenly forgetting about all the other trends which are reshaping our future.
When that happens, people tend to lose sight of the remarkable advances, driven by science and innovation that are occurring. In manufacturing and construction, we are fundamentally changing what we make and how we make it; in insurance, what we insure and how we insure it; in retail, what we sell and how we sell it; and in agriculture, what we grow and how we grow it!
And in the world of healthcare, the same type of remarkable transformation is underway.

2,500 days. It's a big milestone. Not that I count or anything.
I found today's motivational message the other day on a tree, in the forest behind my home, while out chasing the sunrise on my morning walk. Walking along, musing in my mind, I suddenly saw an old stump onto which someone had written a small bit of tiny graffiti. The simple phrase, with a fun little smile, brought incalculable joy to my heart.
"Love life."
That brief moment - and the smile it brought to my face - is typical of the mindset I carry around with me today, each and every day. That moment came to me just after I caught a glimpse of the sun rising in splendor,
