Can I just go on the record that it's $11 Canadian, and I ain't giving it these valuable Canadian dollars.

I must admit, I love carrd.co.
A simple little engine that is a simple little drag and drop and type Website generator. Simply pick a template; fill in stuff; drag in pictures. No HTML coding (though you can if you like), no WordPress templates, and plugins.
Just pick a template and go. (There are dozens)

This one came when I was coming out of Toronto airport last week - and saw the area where support has been set up for the new Ukranian refugees arriving for a new life in Canada.
Any time any of us ever have a bad day - we need to give ourselves a reality check.

Context matters!
Could it get any worse? Much more so - and we would do well to remind ourselves as to how blessed we often are with the fortune of good times. As that famous 80's pop song goes, 'there's always something there to remind me" of the context of just how good things are in the context of how challenging things are for so many other people.
A few weeks ago my wife and I were returning from a trip and coming through Toronto's Pearson Airport. Just after the International Arrivals section is a sectioned-off area for the welcoming of new arrivals - refugees - from Ukraine. Essentially, it's there to welcome to Canada those who are fleeing an unnecessary and horrid war. Through no fault of their own, they've lost everything - their jobs, homes, careers, and connections to family. Could it get any worse? Nations like Canada are working to try to make it better by welcoming them.
What do you and I have to complain about in the context of such a tragedy? Nothing. Nothing at all.
FOMO runs fast. FOMO drives crazy stuff.

The context of what is happening in Tennessee summarizes contradictory-America.
I've been a speaker on the circuit for 30+ years. With that, I know that the current 'hot topics' come and go.
This year, THE topic for every conference, event, association meeting, and leadership event is DEI - Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. DEI speakers are having a moment, so to speak.
Many of those events will be held in Nashville's Gaylord Opryland - a massive hotel/conference center. I've spoken there dozens of times.
And so DEI will share their in-demand topic on a stage in a city in a state that just expelled two elected representatives for being, well, black.
Most folks at these events will have come from across the US, will have heard a DEI speaker, have thought 'That was a powerful talk' and then go back to doing nothing at all with what they have learned.

Since this has become my go-to desktop tool - how about a setting that would require us to include an alt-text before a post is accepted.
3 options:
- Require on all posts
- Give a reminder, but allow post ("are you sure?")
- Turn off altogether

As a futurist, I regularly track my predictions. I've been pretty right on most things for 30+ years.
I realized today that the post I wrote in 2021 when I was pretty down about the state of world affairs, has now seen point #1 become true.
The evidence? A Texas judge ruling on abortion - meaning that one person can now easily overcome majority rule; the situation in Tennessee (likely soon to be replicated and repeated in other states) with basically disenfranchises voters at will, and so much more.
As a Canadian, it is terribly dispiriting to watch it happen in real-time. We are hopeful for our country but know we have challenges too.

But you can't sit back and follow 4 people and expect it to be anything more than empty.

My greatest weakness? It's probably the fact that I'm not very good at riding out the highs and lows, the ebb and flow of a world that is constantly shifting - and in days past, the manner by which I dealt with that wasn't terribly helpful. To deal with that today, I focus on my optimism and my ability to see something good out of things that are negative. (
It always helps to pause every once in a while and take a personal inventory of our mindset and our routines, to discover where we might improve. With that in mind, how do you focus on your strengths?
- with every bit of small success or failure, focus on the lessons learned to find some next steps
- always remember that persistence pays off - don't give up, give more attention to it!
- use moments of adversity as a chance to regroup to focus on your growth
- and have the courage to take on what you think you might not be able to do - so that when you accomplish them, it's a huge moment!
- remember that the path to success is always a continuous journey that needs to be reinforced, not a destination that you reach but once
- be resilient - manage the setbacks and keep going!

Boring is the new great!

People don't like 'boring' - it's boring. They like fast-moving, exciting, edge-of-your-seat excitement.
So too it is with the future - AI is exciting, it's fast, it's far reaching. That's an exciting future.
But boring? That's to be found in some of the most slow moving, somewhat uninspiring, and definitely unexciting trends - yet most far-reaching of future trends - for want of a better phrase, 'methodology modification.' I covered this yesterday in my latest post to my BIG Future series.

Companies collapse slowly, and then all at once.
I was reminded of this reality while reading the book "The End of the Cold War" by Robert Service.
The book starts out with the election of Ronald Reagan, and while I haven't finished reading it yet, I know how it ends. (-;
What really caught my attention, tough, were the parts that took apart the slow - and then sudden - collapse of the Soviet economy. One section in particular near the start drew my attention, and a phrase jumped out at me - as you will see below.

The USSR was at an impasse. its leaders knew that it aced economic competition that it stood no early chance of matching. Its institution mechanisms of party rule and state industrial coordination, and nobody was coming up with any ideas that would lead to basic improvement. There was plenty of criticism and too little thought about solutions. The Politburo was filled overwhelmingly with people whop were habituated to an organizational and ideological order that had undergone scant change since the death of Stalin.

The part of that phrase that really caught my attention was the one about an excess of criticism over solutions.
I thought to myself - this sounds like many companies that I know!

My big struggle was to try to do jim@mastodon.jimcarroll.com - too much of a fight with nginx - so I just stuck it on a nice domain name that I had kicking around which fits the brand.

That's the power of storytelling, and Neil McOstrich is the creative mind behind the ad. He is one of the most brilliantly creative people that I know.
I first met Neil when I found myself on the Membership Committee of our club back in 2008 - the global recession was kicking in, and there were concerns as to whether our club could keep its momentum and growth going. We were tasked with coming up with ideas of how to do this.
To that end, Neil came up with the brilliant slogan one day while hiking up the hill after a full day of skiing. It essentially captures the essence of the happiness that so many of us find while spending our winter weekends there - when he first shared it, we all knew that this was it.

AI In Healthcare - Why the Acceleration of Knowledge Will Be the Biggest Challenge!
Here’s a fun fact about knowledge – prior to Covid, it’s estimated that the volume of medical knowledge was doubling every 6 to 8 years. It’s now estimated to be doubling every 78 days, if not faster!
Now comes faster AI. Keep in mind, it's already been a big part of healthcare!
What's going on? We have doctors detecting and diagnosing irregular heart rhythms known as atrial fibrillation, potentially years before they might otherwise have been detected, interpreting signals that are so subtle that humans might not be able to detect them. We are using specialized cameras to examine eyes, combined with AI to detect diabetic retinopathy, which is a leading cause of blindness.
All of this means that AI tools were already becoming significant throughout every single aspect of healthcare and the issue of keeping everyone up to date with their knowledge - professionals, administrative, and clinical staff - has already been a challenge.
With that in mind, consider what those in the industry are thinking - in a recent survey:
- 85% - a significant number of participants - indicated that they did not have any formal educational opportunities about AI
- 74% indicated that AI-related learning opportunities were inadequate

While everyone is talking about the fun and exciting stuff about ChatGPT and stuff, no one is talking about the industry, career, and knowledge implications. I am.
But there is also this issue. For the post, I asked Microsoft's Bing AI tool to draw me some images.
The prompt? "A doctor is standing in front of a futuristic screen. The screen depicts the exponentiation of knowledge with charts and graphs, signifying new forms of medical knowledge, forms of treatment, diagnosis, new medical technologies, and more. The image has. very futuristic look"
Every single doctor is male.
Algorithm bias is real.
They have no plan for it.
This is an important read. I'll admit I learned a lot as to what I wasn't thinking about. If I ever stop learning about things I should be thinking about, I'm in trouble.

And hence, all these articles about a small towns and big city red-state locations where women can't have babies at the local hospital anymore.... because ... they've chased them away.
My mind boggles. Some 60% to 70% of obstetricians in the US are female.
Can I just say that it's my birthday, and I just wasted two hours out in the big red comfy chair on my deck, reading Mastodon posts.

In Grade 11, I was told I had to study poetry. I told the teacher I ***hated ***poetry, and wasn't coming to class.
So he told me I had to do something to get my mark for the term.
"Fine!" I said with the unique attitude of a 14-year-old. "I will type you a novel!"
So on the last day of term, I went in and handed him this book. Now 15, I presented it with all the attitude a 15-year-old can muster. It was a Chinese/Russian/US spy thriller.
It even had a sex scene.
He was shocked. Not at the sex scene, but the fact I typed out - on a real typewriter - a full novel, from scratch.
I got a mark of 97.
I still don't like poetry.
I really dislike bad poetry.
I've got to get this book on Amazon one day. My wife and son converted it to PDF etc, so it would be a slam dunk.

I was thinking about this the other day....and early this Saturday morning, while out chasing the sunrise on my morning walk, this phrase hit me.

The hook, the hit, the bait?
"Freshly baked."
It's unique, it's catchy, and it's memorable. It implies what it means - brand new, fresh out of the oven - or in this case, fresh out of my mind.
And it has variations.
Like "Disruptive Trends Insight. Freshly baked."
Or "Creative Innovation Insight. Freshly Baked."
And "Future scenario insight. Freshly baked."
And even "Intelligent AI Insight. Freshly baked."
Catchy! I'm already sprinkling it into my site and into my materials.

Also, server-level backups (I think he's on AWS) are very important.
Last but not least, I use Blogvault for Wordpress backup for my own and all my friend and family sites - I've had situations where I've had to do a restore and have things back up and running in <10 minutes. Well worth the investment.

For those who don't know, CBC/Radio-Canada is our national public broadcaster. Yes, they are government funded. No, they are not a government mouthpiece. And they are respected by many, just not the usual wingnuts.
I appeared on dozens of their shows hundreds of times over the years. It is a MASSIVE operation, reaching into every nook and cranny of our country.
This is a significant move.
So the Canadian CBC/Radio Canada is 'pausing' Twitter.
They need to understand Mastodon. They need to architect a presence here. They need to get their heads into how this place is different, can be used to reach out to Canadians, and be used as a tool for growth in their programming and mission.
I appeared on the network, literally hundreds of times, explaining the importance of the unfolding Internet ... on radio shows, TV shows. I'm probably in the archives with all these shows.
Here I am in November 1993 explaining to two hosts of a popular Toronto CBC show what was unfolding.
I no longer have contacts there, but if anyone does - they need to hear this story again.

Legacy automotive companies have become the Polaroids of our era.
Famous for its instant camera and film, Polaroid didn't anticipate the arrival of digital cameras - and then actively denied its reality when it did arrive. It presumed that the foundation for its revenue - instant film -would always exist without any change. When the arrival of the digital camera arrived, heralding the end of the film era, Polaroid's denial meant that it was too far behind in doing what was necessary to try and catch up. It filed for bankruptcy in 2001, although its brand, which was sold, lives on as a niche brand today.
Many car companies have been following the same path - for the last two or three decades, they have tried to avoid the obvious future which involves the electrification of the future. And yet, active denial in the face of an obvious future is a form of leadership negligence.
What can we learn from this? No matter who you are and what you do, your tomorrow will not be like today. Acceptance of your future is the first step in dealing with that change. But actually taking the steps to get there is often the hardest part - and becomes much more difficult the more you try to delay the inevitable.
Accept your future.
Do what you need to do to get there!

The future abhors inaction.
Yet most organizations become trapped within it, driven by a leadership team that is frozen in place, unable or unwilling to move forward. The results are predictable.

Digital Equipment froze in place when the personal computer (PC) came along, famously refusing to get involved. The result was predictable as they eventually were bought out for a fraction of their value by a PC company, Compaq. That company then disappeared because it too froze in place, refusing the accept the direct-to-consumer business model pioneered by Dell Computer! (Incidentally, one of the biggest bookings in my still-forming career as a speaker occurred in 1993 when DEC booked me on a 7-city 'roadshow' to highlight the growing importance of the Internet. At least they got that trend right!)
What are the other causes of inaction? Uncertainty, arrogance, hubris, complacency, resistance to change, inadequate resources - the sins of leadership failure are vast.

@admin Terry knows me. I've been on the phone a few times with her husband; he runs her server on AWS and so I've given him a bit of guidance over time on Masto admin stuff at the server level. She has a single-user instance too, so it wasn't from her; it was from someone over at mastodon.world
I contacted the admin there and they dismissed the report.
Fascinating stuff! This is a wonderful lesson in the whole idea of federation moderation.

@ariadne I'm running my single user Vultr 22.04 Ubuntu instance for $12 a month. My AWS S3 setup for media tells me that I could have done it for $6 a month if I could have squeezed the compile into 1MB of memory, but it needed 2MB.
It's inevitable that as the Fediverse grows, low cost easy installs ("1 Click Fediverse on Control Panel!") will grow. I don't think the solution/blame can be laid at economics and / or ease of installation. There will be massive challenges going forward. Somehow email managed to figure out a path (or, one could argue, is still trying to figure out that path)

***Leadership Lessons from a 14-Year-Old CEO***
Throughout my career, I've had the wonderful opportunity to share the podium at many events with some of the world's most fascinating leaders and celebrities. The late Jack Welch of GE once shared his leadership insight directly after I spoke on stage about the need for speed; Roger Goodell of the NFL was the next speaker directly after my opening keynote at a sports conference; the late Carrie Fisher - Princess Leia of Star Wars - spoke about mental health issues after my opening talk at a healthcare conference.
All of these instances - with both the pre-event preparation as well as my time at the event - have given me the opportunity to witness, in real-time, valuable leadership insight from some top world leaders. Much of what I have seen has become an incubator for my own insight; I try to take the time to learn from these world leaders and icons in order to continually enhance my own perspective.
And yet, I've also learned that you don't need to look only to those famous leaders, business icons, and global innovators for this type of valuable knowledge - you can simply look around you and discover it in the most unusual of places.
Such as right next door.

A lawyer I know is moving his office across the street. He's cleaning up his office. These are floppy disks that we sent him when he signed up to my pre-Internet Internet like service in 1986.
Thornet was an initiative we started in 1983; it provided email, access to databases (news, sports, tickers, research), database creation and more. At one point I had about 4,500 people around the world online in 35 countries - and knew all the ins-and-outs of how to script access via modem via Datapac, TymNet, Telenet and other global packet networks.

I'm ranked pretty highly ... kinda stunned actually. I'm viewing this as the idea that my blog will end up in a lot of AI chats wtih references (like Bing does), and that this is sort of the new search engine optimization.

@wrog When I was in Federal Court in 2002, the defence was trying to get me to go to a Web site on a page in Sri Lanka, and state that the information there was accurate and true. I look at him like he was wonky. Today, the courts do this regularly. They're in a strange space ... and it is only going to get worse. Chain-of-custody etc? Massive issues. Mark my words - one day ChatGPT or some such will be used in real time, in a court. It's FU beyond repair. But its gonna happen.

Not a day goes by that you don't run across dozens of articles, literally hundreds of social media posts, and all kinds of opinions about what is happening. One thing is clear - everyone agrees this is both exhilarating and terrifying.

That's why I've started to go "Beyond ChatGPT" with my clients and my insight, digging deep on an industry-by-industry basis of how AI - multiple different use cases, technologies, and algorithmic methodologies - have already been transforming entire industries, and will continue to do so.

What's the role and impact of AI in construction? What opportunities and challenges will it present?
To start to answer that question, you must consider the big, transformative trend that is driving forward the future of the industry overall - what I've come to call "Methodology Modification." It doesn't very exciting, but is actually a massive trend, and it's part of my BIG Future megatrends series.
Consider,for example, what this means in the world of construction.
Quite simply, the way we do things in construction is changing, and AI is going to play a huge role. Much of this construction process involves a regular series of iterative processes, repeated over and over again. If we can automate this with some type of intelligent process management capability, and then examine the quality of our work, we have achieved something of significance – and that is where AI is taking us to.

@zsk That's pretty interesting. The BBC senior management team had me over - twice - for keynotes in 2003 and 2004 that focused on the future of broadcasting, specifically around the Internet and tech. They were busy trying to figure out how deep to go strategically.
They need to do the same thing at a senior level now. They have to understand how social media is changing, and that distributed architectures like Mastodon - and architectures like Peertube - are at the heart of it.
Also, my slides looked like crap back then LOL!

This post originally started out with this thought in mind: “You don’t have a right to success. But you do have the right to learn it and earn it!” My original idea was to come up with a list of 101 things you could do to try to learn and earn your success going forward.
But at the same time, a potential client was asking me for a video clip of how I do my text message polling on stage – it’s an effective way for audience interaction. While editing the clip, the phrase ‘good failure’ came to mind – because my attempt failed live, in real-time, in front of the audience.
I then turned around and used that failure to my advantage to emphasize a key point. In effect, the video clip is an example of ‘good failure‘ in action!

@Drew_CM This literally defined my life for two months back in 1997. They had to come to install pipes in our street. Right in front of our house, they hit a massive underground stream. They had to put in place a massive pumping system and all kinds of infrastructure. It did not go well. My sons were 2 and 3 1/2 at a time, and we literally sat upstairs having breakfast every day watching them, and then throughout the day (I work at home). It was magical!

"What are we going to do the first time someone wants to have an AI chatbot offer evidence in a court trial? Is the evidence reliable? Will it be trustworthy, or might it include some invalid or plainly incorrect misinformation? Will lawyers on both the plaintiff and defendant sides be prepared to deal with these thorny, complex new legal issues? This is not a mythical issue – indeed, we will probably see this challenge arrive before we know it.
What are association executives going to do as ChatGPT and other technologies begin to chip away at the knowledge base within their profession? What will they do to deal with the absolute explosion of new knowledge that is already emerging – and how will they prepare their members for that? What do they need to do with professional education so that careers don’t disappear – but evolve at the speed of AI?
What will corporate risk managers and legal staff do to deal with an absolute flood of new legal risk issues, involving complex new legal issues that did not previously exist? How will they manage fast emerging trademark, copyright, intellectual property and other new issues? What will they do as artificially-generated ‘misinformation-at-scale’ floods their world posing complex new defamation, libel and other challenges?
Most of us already know that – the last few months have been a whirlwind with new AI technologies.
The big question is – what do we do about it?"

Laudatory feedback.
It's a problem.
Quite often, organizations begin to suffer because the leadership team only ever hears how great they are doing - not how poorly things are actually going. Their corporate culture only filters to them words of praise, not phrases of negative feedback. They have surrounded themselves with individuals who fawn over them and speak to their success, and avoid any who might dare tell them the truth. Their team consists of people who will always agree with them, rather than challenge them. Individuals who will offer up glowing words of acclaim rather than the darker notes of condemnation. They never get any constructive criticism - only laudatory flattery!
It usually doesn't end well.

@fringe Totally familiar with it; I've installed it on a server here and out on the cloud. My studio can pump out RTMP and RTSP feeds into servers like this for blasting out. I've got services that do the same thing (see https://virtual.jimcarroll.com)
But it doesn't do a video embed in a toot. Periscope was nice because I could hit 'go live' and it would do a tweet with the live video embedded right it. Can't do that here in this account....

Here's some context.
1. Some people in society are living longer - for those with a good lifestyle, health, 90 is the new 75
2. As people live longer, society has to grapple with longer lifespan brain disease. While before we had to manage an Alzheimer's patient for 5 or 10 years, it might now be 10, 20, 30, 40 years
3. Impact? Dementia/Alzheimer's cases are exploding - the number of patients with dementia / **Alzheimer’**s is set to **double** to 66 million by 2030 – and to 115 million by 2050!
4. This is happening in the context of a country that has armed itself to the teeth
You can expect to see more of this type of thing, not less.

The position, reporting to the Board of Directors, will be responsible for monitoring, assessing, and interpreting an ever-increasing flood of new AI-based risks and preparing scenarios for management to counter them; quarterbacking the deep ethical and moral issues that come with the increasing use of AI within the organization; coming up with and working with HR to monitor a company-wide "AI Code of Conduct," applicable to all staff; working with the Chief Legal Officer on the never-ending number of new AI-related copyright, trademark, and intellectual property issues hitting the organization; spending time with the corporate IT department to come up with policies, strategies, and structure to firewall corporate information sources so that they don't become fodder for content within large-language models...

I'm being interviewed from my home broadcast studio Monday about AI, by an AI.
It's being pumped out live to Youtube, Facebook and LinkedIn ... and will hit live.futurist.info via an @owncast server I setup. It's coming out of eCamm live with an RTMP feed into that server.
The server is a simple (Debian, I think) one-click install ; for scaling I'll fire it over to an s3 bucket on Vultr's Object Storage system.
Total cost if I keep it. About 10 bucks a month
10AM Monday morning EST. You can tune in... I'll have a link in my feed 10 minutes before

It was a trivial setup, considering I spent two years in my basement, building two virtual studios
My setup:
1. Green paint, lots of lights, lots of cameras, virtual studio sets, &gear
2. ECamm.Live - It's a Mac software alternative to OBS and VMix, which screamed to me of being like Windows barf

4. ECamm pumps out simultaneously to multiple destinations including Youtube, LinkedIn, Facebook (where I'll go live on Monday). It also dumps out RTMP which is the key to getting it into OwnCast
5. I used Hetzner to quickly create a little Owncast server. A little bit of admin fiddling, DNS config - boom, https://live.futurist.info
6. I want to offload bandwidth potential on this cheap little 4 Euro Hertzner server so I create a Vultr Object storage for 5 bucks. Gives scale potential
7. I use S3cmd off a home Linux box to configure the bucket, since I've already linked my Futurist.info server for Mastodon object storage and don't want to blow it up!
8., Configure owncast to use that
9. I feed eCamm the RTMP credentials (access key, secret key, endpoint), hit LIVE, and I'm live on my new OwnCast server
10. Bam. I go live. Works like a charm.
Easy peasy.

@ai6yr It's literally a 9x12 room off my home office. (You can see my Linux server farm along the way. Every home needs one. Old 2010 Macbooks make great Ubuntu servers!)
And yes, I've been back on the conference circuit, for a time; events come and go, but the biz is definitely back. Last year was in Switzerland, UK, Belgium, and throughout the US. And 5 shots in (originals + boosters) have still never caught the thing. My wife travels with me (I jokingly call her the bodyguard) and she has never had it either.

Take a look at this page. This guy has to go into a ridiculous amount of detail on how to do what should just be a simple thing.
