Another wave of Twitter refugees, realizing that there is nowhere to go but down.
You might notice my Mastodon instance name, futurist.info
It's just me here. I decided early on I wanted my own 'identity' ; my own instance. Just like I got my own email address back in the 90's (under jimcarroll.com)
I think over time :
- you might find your current Mastodon home doesn't fit your future - it might become like a HotMail or AOL email address
- you might want to know how Mastodon actually works by having your own setup
- in the months to come, we will see a LOT of paid self-hosting options that might let you set up your own identity for a small fee.
With all that in mind, here's the story of how I did it.

So this happened 29 years ago today.
Today I'm installing Motion-Eye on top of Motion on Ubuntu 22.04 within a VirtualBox virtual machine on a 2009 Mac Pro (tower) running El Capitan to grab some screen images of webcams to feed over to a Home Assistant installation running on a 2009 iMac running HA under a Virtual Box.
Because, it's raining, and I can't golf.

It was 29 years ago yesterday when the wildest moment became pretty wild.
I only happened to notice when I glanced at a picture frame I have on the wall in the home office and saw that the date lined up.
I clearly remember that day - I had taken my young children off to the playground. When I came back, my wife Christa gently steered me into the kitchen towards the fridge, where had placed the bestseller list from one of our national newspapers. We were at #1.
The fact is, we didn't make just one bestselling book list - we also made that spot in the national Globe & Mail newspaper and were within that spot in both for about 12 or 14 weeks. it was a wild time, and a wild new career was born.
Everyone had told me that this little book project that I was involved in with my good friend Rick was doomed to fail. It would never sell, and would never amount to much. From that point, Rick and I went on to write 33 other books, involving the Internet and healthcare, business strategy and leadership, financial and money management, small business, and more.
it's a heck of a story - and tells the tale that 'never in your wildest dreams' might always become a wild dream.

Never take anything for granted. Never become complacent. Never dare to presume that what you bring to your day today is what you will bring to your day tomorrow. Never assume that what is working right now will work tomorrow. Never think that what you sell today is what customers will demand tomorrow. Never assume the foundation you put in place yesterday will survive the challenging forces of tomorrow.
These are some of the most powerful reminders you can carry with you as you go through your career and life. Complacency is a dangerous drug, a destroyer of much success.
I was reminded of all this yesterday as I struggled to put my thoughts into words today to mark the American July 4th holiday. Here in Canada, my home country, we are back to work having celebrated our 156th year of unique success on July 1.
Our nation is seeing much of the same challenge and risk as the global forces of authoritarianism and vile politics invade our psyche. And yet, we seem to be doing ok - so far. South of the border, things seem far more challenging.
As the writer @davepell stated here on Mastodon yesterday, things can often change.

Already referred to by many as the "Twitter killer,' the new social media platform launched by Facebook / Instagram is bound to have a massive impact on the future. You can't simply take a platform that is said to have 2.35 billion monthly active users and suddenly give them a new social media platform - and not have a massive impact.
Social media has empowered people around the world in their pursuit of knowledge and information, has connected families and friends, brought together communities of interest such as scientists and researchers, has given politicians previously unavailable reach, and has allowed corporations and government agencies to reshape how they communicate with the world.
At the same time, social media has destroyed politics as we know it, allowed the acceleration of hate, racism, and misogyny, caused untold numbers of problems for organizations, and greatly contributed to a general decrease in civility, courtesy, and respect in society, not to mention the arrival of a new form of social-media based mental illness feeding upon conspiracy theories and misinformation. It has proven to be a cancer to the populace.
And now comes a new tool that promises the opportunity for upwards of 2.35 billion people to join in.

It is going to mainstream very fast. People won't care for privacy and other issues. They are eager for something that just works and even though it doesn't work (yet) they won't care.

I waste time. It's great.
Everyone knows that great things can come from wasted time - so do more of it. Here are some great goals for your day today:
- do frivolous things
- daydream
- explore inconsequential stuff
- gaze into space
- relentlessly explore
- let your mind wander
- invest time in stuff that doesn't matter
- always wonder 'how things work'
- pursue useless projects
Why? Because doing these things will feed your curiosity about the world around you - and your curiosity can be the engine for your success. In my case, success comes from understanding trends that shape our world - and if I can participate in the genesis of a trend, I can better understand what's behind that trend in terms of impact, speed, acceleration, and discovery.
Case in point: I have an odd little hobby that I share with thousands around the world, and my participation has given me deep insight into how global scientists are undertaking the deep research necessary into the fast-moving science of 'protein folding.'

"What do you do for a living?"
That's a common question that we all get, and to be honest, I've long struggled to provide a succinct answer. A few of my more common quick intros to the topic: "I go out and talk to large groups of hungover people." "You know that guy on stage - ya, I'm that guy?" "I'm like a motivational speaker but I focus on real stuff." But that of course leads me down the path of what it is I do; I'm an author, a columnist, and a speaker. Then I mention the word 'futurist', and sometimes I get a quizzical look. Some folks have an actual idea of what a 'futurist' does, having seen someone on stage in that role; some have even seen me at a conference here or there. In other cases, they perceive an odd cultish-incantation-based oddity dreaming up crazy science fiction scenarios in a weird bat-cave-like facility.
This leads me to the next part of the conversation, and I'll often run to my go-to phrase - "I help people imagine tomorrow. Today." ... I'll launch into how I do this through research, a simple thought process, experience, and more.

Daily Inspiration: AI Governance: "The bad implementation of a great idea will always become a great example of a really bad idea!" - Futurist Jim Carroll
A few years ago, during the Q&A section of a presentation I gave in Sao Paoo, Brazil, I was asked by the moderator what I thought were the biggest issues faced by organizations going forward. I indicated that it was probably the lack of respect, diligence, and care around issues of computer and network security and that organizations would end up paying a big price for their negligence in what we might call "technology governance."
What's that? Governance? It's the framework that an organization puts in place to guard against future issues, risks, and challenges. I
I was thinking about this yesterday while I was knee-deep in the research I'm doing to prepare for a talk to a group of 60 CEOs for an upcoming event - the topic, of course, being AI. My research was confirming my core belief that going forward, in their rush to implement new AI opportunities, many companies are going to fail with security, privacy, and other issues - and so we will once again see a new flood of bad implementations of a great idea.
So, in 1994, IBM went into a project with me to film "The IBM Family Guide to the Internet."
We all have those embarrassing moments in my career. This was one. My 'acting' career ended soon after LOL.

What is amazing about this - think about what it takes to get IBM to put their logo on something. They put a HUGE amount of trust in me.

Seriously, though, we did write it with a uniquely Canadian spin - how to get on, Canadian resources, ISPs, and local issues... ended up writing 34 books and sold > 1 million copies.

Your career is built on. foundation of trust; your reputation is your most critical asset; your integrity is your most important calling card; the professionalism you bring to your work is your most important reference.
And you will know that any time you have an opportunity in front of you - whether pursuing a new job, chasing a consulting contract, or exploring some new opportunity, due diligence is a key part of the process. Whoever is interested in you will dig into your LinkedIn profile, Twitter feed, and other information-rich sources; they will peel back the legacy of your previous work; they might reach out to your references. They will examine your experience, and take a look at who has been willing to place their trust in you.
I've always got some useful information to share with these prospective partners when they approach me.

My dad was a part of this landing force. Hard to think that 80 years ago, as a 21-year-old, he was throwing his life on the line to defend democracy and freedom. Even harder to believe that there are so many today eager today to take it away.

We are surrounded by machines that are making decisions on our behalf; bits of silicon processing information, determining some state of action based upon some pre-defined set of rules; gates of logic that determine how to proceed based on some virtual interpretation of the reality in which we live.
We can only hope they are doing it right.
I'm reminded of this each and every day as I look at the plethora of devices that are a part of my life and the online networks in which I participate.
But the reality was brought even closer to home when my wife and I recently embarked on a 1,800 km round trip road trip in my Tesla Model 3 and relied on the network of Tesla Superchargers for our journey. The good news is - as any Tesla owner will tell you, the company has done an absolutely brilliant job in creating an infrastructure of reliability with a network that can get you anywhere in North America from Point A to Point B.
The bad news is that so far, my wife and I are 'data algorithm wimps' - we have not yet developed the ability to place our full trust in the Tesla charging algorithm. Perhaps that is because we are boomers; or perhaps, we are just new to the game of EV algorithmic charging, despite having had the car for almost two years.
Welcome, to the 21st century - a time of all algorithms, all the time!

Daily Inspiration: "'I'm going to do it anyway' is usually not a good setup for success!" - Futurist Jim Carroll
Golf is all about the rhythm, mindset, tempo, and pre-shot setup. Given that it is summertime, I've got a few games going on. And while I'm out there, I can't help but relate the success and failure that I see on a personal level to issues of mindset, leadership, and innovation success. That's because we often make decisions out on the course that are similar to the decisions we make on a day-to-day basis in our careers and our organizations.
Many of those decisions are not the right ones - but we pursue them anyways, even though we know it is wrong.
Consider, for example, one of the worst, and most consistent mistakes that a golfer can make - the 'I'm going to hit it anyways' shot. That's the one where you know you haven't teed the ball up properly - it's too high and you know you are going to have a pop fly, or it's too low, and you know are going to 'skull' it, or you have it set up pointing in the wrong direction and you know it is going to go into the trees or will visit the creek or pond. Seconds before your swing, you know you are doing it wrong, but you decide, "I'm going to hit it anyways." That thought enters your mind momentarily, but you swing ... and it goes spectacularly wrong.
Because, even when you know it was wrong, you decide to do it anyways!
Companies, people, and organizations do the same thing.

@lkngrrr I'm Canadian. We just a 1 million-strong Pride Parade in Toronto as happens every year. Like many, we're kind of worried about our southern neighbors.
Down the street from me are a lovely couple with a wonderful 3-year-old and 2-year-old who bring joy to my heart every day with their smiles as they go past. I just hope they have the chance to grow up in a normal world with their wondeful moms without facing any ill-conceived Christian hate.
After all, I was raised a Catholic (long since abandoned) but we were sort of taught to love our fellow humans, not hate them.

In 1998, a few years before Steve Jobs announced the iPod, I had an Mp3 player called the Eiger F10, arguably the world's first portable digital entertainment device.
A small little thing, it held the music in digital format in removable memory - flash cards, as it were - and so the capacity you had depended on the card you used. I think mine could hold about 20 songs. To get music onto the device, I had to plug the card into my computer, encode some songs into the proper format, and transfer them. And to get those songs into the proper format, I had to 'rip' my CDs - that is, use some special software to take them off of a CD and turn them into an Mp3 file.
A few years later, I upgraded to a Creative Nomad Jukebox - a true media powerhouse, it could hold thousands of songs. It was rather big and bulky though, and the same problem remained - it wasn't easy to get music onto the device.
I still have these two devices, and on occasion will take them out, sharing them on stage as examples of the failure of forward-oriented thinking. After all, it took the insight of Steve Jobs at Apple to realize that the fundamental problem with this wonderful emerging technology was that the digital music issue had to be solved before a true market for such a device emerged.

The two movies of the summer appear to be Barbie and Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One. I have yet to see either; I'll certainly find inspiration for innovation, creativity, and trends in both.

A Real-Life Spycatcher Explains is a fun read, and I am one of two experts quoted (the other being a former FBI counterintelligence and counterterrorism operative, who obviously gets most of the 'ink.') The writer previously interviewed me for my take on the Back to the Future series.
Gait analysis, smart contact lenses, exploding gum, gecko-like walking pads - science fiction movies always offer up a wonderful vision (or a terrifying one) of a new, complex future. The challenge today is that today's science fiction is often tomorrow's reality sooner than we think.

Daily Inspiration: "If you can't make a simple decision you'll never master a complex future!" - Futurist Jim Carroll
One of the more fascinating aspects of my career is that I am often invited to come in to share my insight on the leadership issues that matter today. Often I am told that the organization that has contacted me has a slow, bureaucratic structure and that they need a keynote that features a rousing call to action - they need insight on fast-moving trends and a message that as a slow-moving organization, they need to learn to make fast decisions.
And then they can't make a decision on whether to book me or not.
I try hard not to laugh. I mean, if they can't make a decision on their need to learn to make fast decisions, how can they ever expect to get to the future?
Why can't organizations make decisions? Analysis paralysis, aggressive indecision, death by committee, complacency, denial, too many layers, not enough fast-moving decision-makers, risk aversion - the list is as long as it gets.
Reality

Denial is the easy way out - there is no problem that we will solve by pretending that it doesn’t exist!
People love to avoid the obvious, work hard to evade the big issues, and do everything they can to hide from reality. We are, after all, skillful manipulators of the truth, avoiders of the reality of problems. We avoid talking about the problems we face, while all around us disruption and change unfold around us at a furious pace.
We avoid the reality that our business models are changing and that we are not changing with them; that our skills are out of date when skills all around are accelerating; that new competitors are emerging that have a better product than we do; that our strategies of yesteryear won't cut it in the fast-moving reality of today - and sure as heck won't survive an even faster tomorrow.
Denial is the defense mechanism we use when we refuse to recognize or acknowledge facts. Freud has said that there are three types of denial - simple denial, simple denial, minimization, and projection. In the first case, we simply refuse to acknowledge something we don't like. In the second case, we downplay the significance of that thing we don't like. In the third case, not only do we downplay and minimize that thing - but we blame someone else for the problem.

If you are trying to figure out the impact and opportunities of AI, the promise and the potential, the peril and the risk, you need to go "beyond ChatGPT."
And to do that, you need to understand that in many industries, AI is bringing together many trends that involve connectivity - hyperconnectivity - leading to new, hyperconnected trends. With that in mind, I'll reshare some insight I previously posted over in my AI Megatrends series. It should energize you for your energy future!
Because after all, nowhere is the world of hyperconnected trends more evident than what is happening in the world of energy.

Obviously, it's never happened, and corporations continue to get what they deserve by not, giving if the proper degree of respect we should dig out the article

I admit to being often mystified.
Why would otherwise intelligent people suddenly abandon the science of healthcare - the very science which has resulted in a doubling of human longevity - thus allowing them to spew their odd ramblings even longer through their life? Why would they come to support someone for political office who generates lies, falsehoods, and misinformation at scale, with the result that we will likely see an incase in once-vanquished diseases like polio, measles, and whooping cough? Why have people lost their collective sanity marbles to the insane ramblings of others?
Further - why do so many people try to ignore the future, and don't put in the effort to try to get there? Why do so many people come to think that everyone else will end up in the future but that somehow, they won't? Why do people come to believe that somehow, they can avoid the future? Why do so many people simply decide to participate in whatever future might happen, rather than taking the steps to try to create and engineer a better future for themselves?
Why are so many people in denial of the future?
I am often mystified.

If you aren't thinking 'big' enough, you future might be what you think it is. At some point in time, if it has not yet happened, you’ll come to realize that the future that you thought you had no longer exists, and that you need to do something new. Are you reinventing fast enough?
At a personal level, being able to constantly adapt to an entirely new and different future is no longer an option - it's a necessity. Your skills will continue to go out of date as new ones emerge; your career will undergo significant and relentless change; the company and industry you work for and within will be subject to nonstop upheaval. Nothing will ever stay the same; everything will always be relentlessly different.
And if you are a business organization, the realization that incessant market, product and industry change will one day bring you to the the reality that you need to continually reinvent your future. It's pretty likely that at this very moment, someone is busy with an idea, busy inventing a future, that will have you looking back in five years and saying, "Wow!'
Some organizations realize this before it's too late; others do not. The results are predictable.
At this point, he is just existing on delusions of sanity, fractions of cognizance, overdoses of hubris, the adrenaline of arrogance.
Like, who the fuck is going to trust him with anything?

Great things never happen without commitment.
Commitment doesn't come easily - you've got to approach every single day as an opportunity, every single moment as a reminder, and every single minute as a motivator. You've got to have a goal in mind, a path to achieve, a road to follow, steps to take.
You need a motivational mindset. With that, I've always like the David Bowie song Heroes. It has become, in a way, my personal motivational anthem.
"We can be heroes, just for one day."
Sometimes, to achieve a great thing, you need to develop your own superpower. You need to become your own superhero. You need to develop strength, courage, determination - you need to try to convince yourself that you can do this 'great thing.'
So be a hero.
Just for one day.
July 26 has become a very important day in my life, and every one is a reminder of success, a marker of momentum and a nudge to keep moving forward.
To accomplish a great thing, try to be a hero.

Have you noticed that the media has now shifted from 'all-recession all the time' to 'oops-we-got-the-recession-prediction-wrong?'
Over on Yahoo News, there was a comment to that effect last March:
"There’s a recession-industrial complex in America—a whole field of natterers regularly predicting economic turmoil. Every now and then, they’re right, like the proverbial broken clock. Most of the time they’re wrong. People listen to them anyway."
That's the key line - people listen anyways. And have you now noticed that people - and the financial media - are coming to realize that 2023 is the year that the recession never happened?
I certainly see it with what I do - it's a pretty weird economy. Every day, I get contacted by individuals excited about the potential to bring me in for a leadership talk focused on growth, opportunity, the future, and trends - TOMORROW! They are planning on taking their leadership team to a corporate offsite event to talk strategy, purpose, direction, and transformation - and need an in-depth keynote for the kickoff, something to inspire them and move forward into a faster future.
Then, they run it up the flagpole, and word comes back that they don't have a budget for it.
In other words, they are trying to invest in the future, but don't want to spend any money to invest in the future.

The old automotive industry is disappearing; a new one is being born. The old world of energy is shrinking; a new one has all the momentum. The old world of healthcare is no longer working; new ideas are flourishing. The old concept of insurance is from the olden days; the new one of real-time insurance is emerging. The old world of methodical construction and manufacturing is being replaced by new methodologies in construction and manufacturing.
You are either part of the reinvention and transformation, or you are irrelevant.
Bold new futures demand bold new thinking; bold changes require bold actions; bold transformations demand bold leaders.
You are either a bold leader aligned to this new world, or you are a timid relic of old thinking.
Nature abhors the weak; the natural selection of the species weeds out those who cannot take the bold, aggressive actions necessary for survival. The same thing is happening in business today; a natural evolution will weed out the timid, mild, inactive, and small-minded organizations that cannot keep up with the fast, aggressive, sweeping, and all-encompassing ideas of the bold.
You are either evolving, or you are wasting - because nothing great was ever achieved by those who are timid!

In the land of social media, it's known as #MotivationalMonday.
Some time back, someone started the idea that there should be an extra bit of inspiration, a dose of motivation, and a touch of incentive for the first day of the week in the Western calendar - the day people head back to work. People post images of inspiration with the hashtag #motivationalmonday and share them around in order to get a bit of encouragement to start their day.
With that being the case, here's my contribution for today's Motivational Monday - "Always put a little bit of ! into your day!" A
How?
Set a big goal. Embrace change. Seek new experiences. Learn continuously. Embrace failure. Take risks. Plan for tomorrow, not today. Network with creative people. Be active - in mind and spirit. Get out of your comfort zone into a new one. Embrace optimism. Chase dreamers. Be a dreamer. Give back. Adatp top change. Invest time wisely. Set goals and chase them. Avoid procrastination. Immerse in diversity. Live for the moment. Be ambitious. Accelerate your creativity. Embrace innovation. Seek opportunities. Celebrate success. Banish negative thoughts.
Stuff like that.

AI image generation is now so bad that there is an AI tool that will check, for a fee, how bad the generation is.
Next: a paid tool that will check the quality of the AI quality tool that is used to check the quality of images generated by AI.

I've integrated CommandBar - it's an AI-type tool that scrapes my thousands of blog posts and gives a ChatGPT-type experience. It's the little icon over there on the right.
I've asked the folks at CommandBar to let me add some text to the embed code to make it obvious what it does, i.e. "Ask My AI!" ... nothing yet...there are simply some options when choosing to embed.
